I can see why a film about the meaning of life and the existence of God can be called pretentious. Not everyone sees film as a medium to tackle those questions or they see films that do tackle those questions as only entertaining if they do so using a traditional linear narrative.

Good point. I wonder how many movies have successfully tackled these issues and found an audience. I'm thinking of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY as an example, but it's all couched in a sci-fi narrative. Or maybe IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, on some level.

I just saw this at a second run theater. Loved the film. A little confusing at times but I'll definitely be buying this once it hits br.

There was an older couple in back of us that i heard say before it started:

'What's this film about?'
'I don't know'

Who the hell goes to see a movie without knowing what kind of film they are seeing??? Do they just draw a movie title from a hat or something?

Question: When someone walks out of a theater, can't they just be going for popcorn or a squirt? How do you know they actually never returned?

I saw the movie twice this weekend on BD and enjoyed the visuals, but thought the movie dragged quite a bit and should have been trimmed down at least 30 minutes. I enjoyed TTRL much more! However, I can see or understand how others had more favorable reactions to it. As they say, art is very subjective.

When I watch a movie, I don't want to think about depressing life issues and emotional problems, I want to be taken away, entertained. And while I've seen my share of tear-jerkers in my lifetime, I would never intentionally go see a movie like this. The synopsis itself is enough to make me want to give this movie a serious pass.

I've lived that life but I certainly don't want to see it on a movie screen. It sounds like Oscar material though. -kd5-

The poll at the beginning of this thread included an option "I'm not watching this pretentious nonsense!". While I'm not necessarily calling this movie pretentious nonsense, by including that option in the poll the OP was basically inviting all-comers to participate in this discussion. It was simply my opinion that it is not the kind of movie that I would willingly pay to see. -kd5-

I was taken away and entertained immensely by Tree of Life. I wouldn't call it a depressing film, certainly not on the level of something by, say, Innaritu or some Lars Von Trier. I may be alone but in a weird way I find it, and Malick's other movies, exciting to watch.

also...I in no way felt depressed in this movie. Requiem for a Dream depresses me. This just had moments of sadness.

Fortunately for you 99% of the films that Hollywood makes are right up your alley. So when one film is thoughtful or contains "depressing issues" can't you just let it be? Does every single film that comes out in a year have to be acceptable to your standards of entertainment? I enjoyed Tree of Life and I didn't enjoy much else that H'wood cranked out this year. Just let it be.

I never said that. I only said this was not the kind of movie I wanted to watch. I'm glad you enjoyed it, doesn't mean I have to see it.
