Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Marshall, 2011) The Reviews Thread
Just got back myself. I enjoyed it overall, but I didn't like how dumbed down it was compared to the previous films. I understand why they did it, but the repetitive explanatory scenes were a bit much. I enjoyed it though as a stand alone story and I thought some of the action sequences were entertaining. The nods to the ride were cute, and Penelope Cruz was cuter...sigh...
Most of the people at my screening stayed for the after credits scene. I think the first 3 movies trained them to do that, so it was pretty much expected that this one would have one too. The audience seemed to enjoy it as well.

All you naysayers that haven't seen the film, go see it and then we'll talk about it.
I saw it last and enjoyed it quite a bit. It wasn't as good as the first one, but as a self-contained film, I thought it was good. Well done from a cinematic standard? Heck no, but a good romp none the less.
I'll see as many Sparrow movies as they want to make.
"I support the missionary's position," got a lot of laughs. It was a good crowd.

One thing that bugged me... I couldn't figure out where I had seen the actor that played Groves (Barbossa's right hand man), so I had to look it up.
Greg Ellis was the millionaire target that Keifer Sutherland went after in Chapter 7 of "The Confession."
He was also in the first and third movies.

A darn good time at the movies!
People complaining about this I just dont get. Its an entertaining film..It seems tho as a series many people dont like the sequels. I think part 2 outdoes the original, part 3 is the weakest but STILL FUN and this one is between part 2 and 3. ITs an EZ 8/10 and GREAT in WORTHWHILE 3D cuz it was shot in it. Thats another thing...tired of this worthless 3D talk...is 3D needed? NOPE....BUT when doen right, why piss on something that adds a little mnore fun?
Abbott & Costello made over 30 flicks...some great some ok, some not so great...BUT..they were STILL Abbott & Costello flicks ..GET IT?
Im reading more tearing apart of Rob Marshall over Gore Verbinski than when directors changed the helm on the HP flicks..WHICH HAVE SUFFERED (slightly) as the series went one..especially the last one. But its still HP and its still quality and made well...JUST LIKE , ON STRANGER TIDES

Not a great film, barely a good one. I don't feel like rehashing my opinion, but if you want to read it, here you go:

We didn't have the time to stay until the end of the credits; can someone post (with spoiler protection) what happened after?

People who hated part 2, but yet went and seen part 3 and hated that , but YET went a seen this one and still complained cant be taken seriously so dont sweat it...they dont like the series, only liked the first but yet go over and over and over again to see the sequels expecting a different result...hammer on the head analogy

I liked parts 2 and 3. They were uneven but they get a bad rap. On Stranger Tides was a step down from the last two.

This review is causing a little bit of a stir around the web. I'd paste the text but it contains some...choice words that I'm not sure are allowed here.

That is a bullshit review from someone who admits they walked out on the film. I don't think it's worthy of reading. It's like some AICN nonsense

And as much as I hated shit like Halloween II, I stayed through the whole thing so my review could be accurate. Leaving before the movie ends shows you shouldn't be reviewing movies, especially for one as inoffensively bland as this.

Saw it. Nowhere near as good as the first one, but better than the two sequels. However, the screenwriters (who also penned the sequels) need to realize that big and bloated stories with a lot of subplots and characters do NOT equal a better movie. Depp brought the goods as always, Ian McShane squaring off with Geoffrey Rush was a site to behold, and Penelope Cruz looks great in 3D. The love story with the mermaid and man of faith was completely useless and a waste of time. Don't know why they felt the need to do it.

Better than the bloated parts 2 and 3. I'm glad they went with a stand-alone story this time, and scaled back the scope.

Same here with parts 2 and 3, I enjoyed them a lot. This was was a step sideways. This one was enjoyable as a seperate story that did well on its own, though not as grand an epic as the last 3 were, which is fine by me. Although this movie is further proof 3D ain't necessary. It didn't serve the story at all.
