The UK DVD comes out on April 22nd. I can't imagine it'll take too long for the US release to follow.

It's playing at my local AMC so might check it out this weekend.

Is this really that low rent of a movie? The kind that just gets a theatrical release for its own sake but is basically straight to video? If so, I might just see if it plays OnDemand as opposed to driving.

Budget was $1.5m, roughly the same as Insidious or 50% higher than the original Saw. It's one of the producer/director Oren Peli's uber low budget horror flicks (as a producer of course - along with Paranormal Activity 1 - 5, Insidious, Chernobyl Diaries, The Bay, and the tv show The River, most are very low budget.)

With that you get low production values but total creative freedom.

And major ROI. If the film makes 5-10 million, it has profited.

Re: Rob Zombie's Lords Of Salem (2012)

Yeah that's a given, I think his first Paranormal Activity had the highest ROI to date. ($193m worldwide on a $15,000 budget).

Insidious only made $54m domestic / $97m worldwide but was considered one of the biggest hits of 2011 because of the ROI as well.

So is OnDemand a possibility?

it has a 44% on RT (which isnt too too bad for a horror flick) and Rex Reed had this to say "so bad its hillarious"

Seeing it tonight at 10:00PM.

Probably would save myself $5-6 seeing it tomorrow morning, but I couldn't wait.

Didn't even know he still did reviews!

Nope, so the screening I was supposed to didn't happen. It's all for the best, though. I'll peep it out on Blu-ray or rent it or whatever.

Re: Rob Zombie's Lords Of Salem (2012)

I'm still trying to compile my feelings about the film after the early screening I attended last night.

Zombie is clearly evoking directors like Stanley Kubrick & Alejandro Jodorowsky in this film. Unfortunately (for most of it's run time), the film is extremely incoherent. The visuals are striking and interesting, but the film becomes just a string of images held together by an extremely thin plot.

I actually enjoyed the performances by Meg Foster and Bruce Davison. The issue is that I wanted more of them, but the film really doesn't give much time for anyone to do anything, even Sheri Moon Zombie.

I also enjoyed the score by John 5, a whole lot as well.

^ Not terribly surprised to read that considering he was rewriting the film every single day. I'm still going to check it out next week.

I didn't hate it, if anything I felt a bit indifferent to it on first viewing.

With that being said, it did keep me curious for repeated viewings. I might either check it out again in theaters, or just buy the UK DVD release that is out in 2 weeks.

I'm definitely interested in hearing what you think about it.

Re: Rob Zombie's Lords Of Salem (2012)

Honestly, I stopped trying to take this film seriously pretty early on. After the nauseating scene with all the naked broads in the coven, it's like all sense of dread or suspense disappeared -- causing the movie to feel increasingly more retarded as it played out (which is not necessarily a bad thing). It got to the point where I couldn't help cracking up at how ludicrous everything was becoming (the scene with Heidi in the church... or when Meg Foster says "****ing daughters of Salem"). You've seen "The Exorcist", Rob... we get it. By the time the little person showed up in the rubber suit with all those things hanging off of him, I just surrendered to the the sheer nuttiness that Zombie had put on screen.

It's his weakest effort by far -- and I'm including Halloween 2. I actually like Sherri Moon, but her performance here was mediocre compared to Babydoll (hell, even Deborah Meyers). We do see a couple gratuitous shots of her ass, but a better actress might have brought some genuine feeling to the scenes. That said, the film is already lacking much for the audience to give a shit about in the first place. There were only five people in the theater (myself included) and two walked out midway through. I kind of wish I'd waited for the BD instead of buying a ticket, but I'd probably watch it again. I'm not a pothead, but I imagine this thing would be simply horrifying (or all the more hilarious) if you were stoned.

You will need a lot more than one bowl to get through this one. I never thought Zombie could make something worse than Halloween 2, but after what I watched today he has. It seemed like a bunch of white trash skits just thrown together. This guy needs to stick to his crappy music and leave the movie making to others who are qualified. I thought he was on the right track with The Devil's Rejects...which I enjoyed, everything else this guy has made has been pitiful. This will easily be on all the 10 worst lists for this year. I cant believe all involved with this sat down and watched the final cut and were satisfied with it. Just a bad, bad movie.

My friend saw this two nights ago and said that it's one of the worst films he's ever seen.

Ropes of Silicon gave it a rave review, which is kind of odd.

This film is the worst thing to happen to the state of Massachusetts since the Boston Marathon bombings.

This may have been the worst film of the year and I saw InAPPropriate Comedy.

Wow. I'm going today. I don't even know what it's about  Sometimes I like to just go in without any movie info. Making it a double feature with Home Run, which I also don't know what it's about

I actually found the plot (at least on paper) to be pretty cohesive. Don't read if you don't want the film spoiled for you:
Spoiler:
Righteous man burns coven of witches. Witches vow that his bloodline will bring forth the antichrist. Cut to present day: Modern day coven conspire to bring forth Satan's spawn through the influence of crappy abstract music on vinyl. Righteous man's great, great, great granddaughter takes drugs and has satanic visions where she's visited by her future demonic offspring. Coven perform ritual to birth the demon seed. Righteous man's granddaughter becomes the satanic equivalent of the Virgin Mary (though I'm sure it's been decades since she was actually a virgin). For me, the major highlight of this schlock was getting to see Dee Wallace bludgeon someone to death with a frying pan.
Despite what some of the positive reviews indicate, Rob Zombie has not created some deep work that needs to be analyzed and interpreted. It's as shallow and simplistic as they come -- made all the more ridiculous by how pretentious the script treats the material.

That sounds like a half episode description of American Horror Story: Coven. If that.

(There are no descriptions out there, but you know, judging off the first few episodes of Asylum.)

The first (and presumably last) time Rob Zombie and Stanley Kubrick will ever be mentioned in the same sentence while discussing directorial merit.
