Re: Rob Zombie's Lords Of Salem (2012)

From what I've read, the opening takes place during the Salem witch trials, then jumps to present day.

I read that synopsis and the first thing I thought of was Jennifer's Body and that *&^%$#@!*>< annoying Through The Trees song, I bet we get 1 hard rock song that gets played over and over in this movie

The Devil's Rejects is a brilliant film. Zombie's other films, not so much.

The threads of this film sound familiar; Chuck Palahniuk's "Lullaby" had a similar story about a song that caused horrific events when uttered. Mind you, it certainly sounds like an odd idea. An evil returns from hundreds of years ago, and the great plan is to kill a bunch of heshers? Hey demons, if you can afford to record and print up a bunch of tickets and posters, maybe you can set the sights a little higher. The culling song would go over gangbusters at the Gathering of the Juggalos. Just sayin'.

Devil's is his one good film. You could tell the rest of them were trying to get to that level, but they failed immensely. Being a huge fan of the original Halloween, I tried hard to like Rob's version. Really tried. But it just wasn't right. He changed so much of what we loved with the original version. You could tell that he was trying to be serious, but it turned out to be more campy and funny....sort of like Scream. Scream knew what it was doing. It was funny on purpose. But Rob's version of Halloween was campy and funny when you know that Rob didn't mean it to be.

CORRECTION:

The Devil's Rejects is a piece of shit.

There, that's better.

Zombie's movies are quite similar to his music; cool atmosphere, superficially enjoyable, but down deep there's little substance. I haven't been able to find another musician with more inane lyrics than Zombie.

I wish him well, as I think he has somewhat decent ideas.

After the absolute train wreck that was Halloween 2 I have no interest in ever seeing another Rob Zombie movie again. God that movie sucked ass.

To yourself, perhaps, though surely someone who can reconcile liking the truly awful I Spit On Your Grave alongside Kieslowski can understand how tastes differ. Whether by accident or not, Zombie created a great horror film with The Devil's Rejects, filled with interesting characters and well-directed action setpieces. Bill Mosley's performance during a particular execution scene, where he commands God's retaliation, is some damn fine acting.

The Devil's Rejects was fantastic and I really enjoyed The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. I'll definitely give this movie a watch.

I'd have to agree, The Devil's Rejects was a very good movie -- one of the few movies where horrible people are the leads, and yet you almost feel sorry for them when they encounter even more sadistic individuals.

Re: Rob Zombie's Lords Of Salem (2012)

I would describe Rob Zombie's movies as "Modern Day Grindhouse Flicks".
I would describe them as complete garbage, with no redeeming value. There are a bad filmmakers, awful filmmakers, and then there is Rob Zombie.

I think instead of watching this I'll just watch The Gate. At least I know when that record plays and evil stuff happens it will be a fun movie that doesn't make me want to shoot myself in the face.

Heidi, a blond rock chick, DJs at a local radio station, and together with the two Hermans (Whitey and Munster) forms part of the "Big H Radio Team."

A mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record arrives for Heidi, a gift of the Lords. She assumes it's a rock band on a mission to spread to spread their word. As Heidi and Whitey play the Lord's record, it starts to play backwards, and Heidi experiences a flashback to a past trauma.

Later, White plays the Lord's record, dubbing them the Lords of Salem, and to his surprise, the record plays normally and is a massive hit with his listeners.

The arrival of another wooden box from the Lords presents the Big H team with free tickets, posters and records to host a gig in Salem. Soon, Heidi and her cohorts is far from the rock spectacle they're expecting. The original Lords or Salem are returning and they're out for blood.

Someone help me here... could this sound any dumber?

Sounds like something I might have come up with when I was thirteen years old.

I thought The Devil's Rejects was really good. House of 1000 Corpses was okay, but the Halloween films were a disgrace.

I thought the Devil's Rejects was great. House of 1000 Corpses was awful. Halloween was good (or not as bad as people make it out to be) and Halloween II was awful.

Either way, I'll wait for a trailer before I pass judgement on this. A story about a masked crime fighter hunting down a criminal who wears clown make up sounds stupid too.

I agree that tastes differ. I disagree with your assessment of I Spit On Your Grave though. If you like The Devil's Rejects, truly, good for you. The film offends me to my deepest levels both as a filmmaker and as a human. I don't feel as if Zombie truly cares about many of his characters. He tries to make truly repellent serial killers with no redeeming value into anti-heroes. That alone wouldn't completely offend me, but unlike Dexter, these characters have no redeeming qualities. The most egregious thing to me in the film is after the torture and murder of most of the country music band, he allows the young wife to live, albeit having endured the extreme trauma of Otis wearing her husband's face and then putting that on her. This is why I feel he doesn't love his characters as directors should. He puts her character through that and then throws her away in a absolutely superfluous and unnecessary gore moment of being run over and turned into pink mist by the tractor trailer truck.

And here is one bit of controversial opinion: I've seen all of Zombie's films save Haunted World. I like some elements of them, but the only one I actually liked was the one no one liked: Halloween 2. Of course, it might be because my expectations were so low for it.

^ Seems like you are taking it too personal :)

Horrible things can and should happen to everybody in a horror movie. Especially in an homage to exploitation.

Yeah I agree about the first Halloween. It wasn't completely perfect but I enjoyed it to some extent. I liked that he changed some of it for his own vision but made it different enough to distinguish between the original and new film. Some of the Meyers family and showing Michael as a kid I could've done without but whatever. The second film however was just complete garbage though and I have no desire to ever watch it again. He just took it way too far and where in most horror movies you kind of have people you root for this movie had none of that. I didn't care about any of the characters and they were all taken to the extreme and the kills were honestly just more disturbing and the movie was depressing to watch.

So... there's been quite a lot of casting news coming out. I'm not going to link all of it, but so far he's added the following actors:

Barbara Crampton
Billy Drago
Richard Lynch
Ken Foree
Lisa Marie
Maria Conchita Alonso
Dee Wallace
Meg Foster

... and, of course, his wife who can't act, Sherri Moon Zombie.

John 5 is reportedly handling the scoring duties.

i'm digging the cast but it's typical rob zombie b-movie cult favorites. i've never really had a problem with his casting though like some have.

also, i guess my original thread has officially been hijacked. :(
