Don't get your hopes up about this "new" QT film yet, guys.

Here's the latest, from Anne Thompson's blog:

In short, it's got a ways to go before Weinstein gives it the green light.

I love how that article ends with another dubious quote from Harry "Chock Full O' Hyperbole" Knowles.

Weinstein would be nuts to not green light this as is, especially since almost everything else they do tanks.

This. I'm thinking it'll be another collaboration w/ someone like Universal? I'd honestly would like it if QT stayed w/ someone safe like Universal who'll understand what his style is and roll w/ it.

IB grossed over $300 million worldwide and was nominated for best picture. Who would turn down QT's next movie no matter what the budget is?

I really wish everyone alive would ignore Harry Knowles. He gives film criticism such a bad name.

You guys really read film scripts before seeing the movies? Hell, I don't even want to see a trailer. I like going in fresh as possible.

Last year I was sitting in the theater watching The Kids Are Alright wondering why it felt so familiar and then remembered I had read the screenplay months earlier. I like to read screenplays and as Suprmallet said they are more like guides.

I love his early, more mature, more insightful stuff ("Reservoir Dogs"; "Pulp Fiction"; and "Jackie Brown"). Now his films are cartoonish, self-indulgent, well grindhouse-level tripe.

I have a feeling that this is just "IB II--The Western". Pass.

^ Although I really enjoyed Inglourious Basterds, I think his writing style is becoming too cliched. The line about how you don't want to be in a basement because it's a basement sticks out although there were a couple more of the same ilk.

That said, the fact that this isn't an automatic greenlight points to how bad Hollywood has gotten.

Agreed.

Also, there's a distinct change in tone in his movies between "Jackie Brown" and "Kill Bill". What happened in those six years?

"Kill Bill" "Death Proof" and "Ingorious Basterds" are waaaaay more pulpy than well, "Pulp Fiction".

I'll watch whatever QT makes. Only film I've disliked of his, like a lot people, is Death Proof.

I'll agree. His reviews are cringe inducing: off the wall rambling, irrelevant personal anecdotes, pretentious attempts at eloquent prose.

You forgot the bewildering sexual analogies.

As I did with the Kill Bill & Basterds scripts, I read them halfway through before ultimately saving the end for the theaters (I'm currently at a halt on page-105 for this script)

No big spoilers, but just in case:
Spoiler:
I feel that things are just a little underwhelming so far, which isn't too suprising because it's pretty hard to be inventive with Western themes. There's quite a bit of gunplay throughout, but these scenes end rather quickly (Even the big REVENGE moments, which occur earlier than expected, aren't as stretched out and pleasing as I imagined) But if the gun-toting isn't bound to get any attention, then it's sure to be the slave-atrocities. Most people probably won't be prepared for the auctions, whipping(s),branding(s),raping, and senseless murders (Though the "Stare-down" during one particular killing is sure to be a powerful highlight when seen on the big screen)
But I think the big, shocking feeling from certain viewers will be directed towards the good ol' N-word. Seriously, this word seems to appear on every page and is almost spoken by nearly every character in the script. I'm sure QT will be forced to cut back on this when it comes to shooting/editing time.

As for casting:
-You can't help but picture Waltz as The German.
-For Django, I kept hearing Terrence Howard's voice while reading Django's lines, but it sounds like someone more physically imposing and of darker complexion will be used.
-For Calvin (Lead villian) I would just love to see an old, but unused, veteran in this part. Not an unknown actor.
-And aside from maybe Zoe in Death Proof, the character of Broomhilda (Lead actress) is the most physically-demanding role for a female character to yet appear in a QT script.
Spoiler:
Won't be used to seeing nudity in a Tarantino film!

*reading feverishly* and yes...I can't imagine anyone but Waltz doing it by the specific phrasing and personality that is somewhat like Landa.

1.) Michael Jai White as Django. I think the guy is on the brink of stepping out of B-movie obscurity and this would be a good mainstream breakout role.

2.) Michael Wincott. A terribly under utilized actor.

Is there anyone who really considers him a film critic and not a professional fanboy? I've been reading AICN since '97 primarily for the news, not the reviews. But even if you're only interested in reviews, there are tons of other reviewers besides Knowles. His detractors need to stop acting like his reviews are the ONLY part of the site.

I would actually hope that Tarantino would go for an actor not already on his list of go-to's. I've been re-watching the 3rd season of The Wire and someone like "Cutty" would be a much more interesting choice than the obvious pick of Michael Jai White or Sam Jackson.

re: Django Unchained - Quentin Tarantino spaghetti western

How would MJW be an obvious pick? Just cuz he was in deleted scene in KB? I don't see Terrance Howard either...it really reads like this guy is a darker complexioned man. I dunno about MJW though some of the later scenes I think MJW would come off to strongly for what was needed.

Sam Jackson is too old. Though by reading I pretty much here his voice as the narrator, dunno if it's the way it reads or cuz he was the narrator in IB but...feels like SLJ.
