0 nominations for Shutter Island. Too bad since that was an extremely well made film. I thought it would at least get art direction or another tech nomination. Of course, it came out WAAAAY back in February '10. Those old basterds can barely remember what was released in November.

Really disappointed Ryan Gosling didn't get a Best Actor nomination. And that Blue Valentine didn't make the cut for Best Pic.

No love by the Academy for The Tourist?

That 5th spot for Actor must have been a very close vote. Gosling had a Globe nomination. Duvall got a SAG, Bardem didn't get either one, and he made it in.

This could be a "Traffic year" where Social Network wins Director, Screenplay, and Editing, but loses Picture. King's Speech has Actor locked up and since they love the movie by giving it 12 noms, I'm betting they'll throw in Screenplay too. Editing once again will be an important indicator on Oscar night.

Not a lot of surprises, except maybe Renner. I thought TRON would get a nom for visual effects and score, but I know once the Academy latches into something (King's Speech), it tends to dominate categories it shouldn't. At least there aren't a lot of sure things, so the night should be interesting.

Out of all the different nominations, I really like the King's Speech for editing. I may change my mind after seeing a couple more films, but of the one's I've seen, it was the mostly tightly constructed and had the best pacing, by a pretty decent margin.

I'm not at all surprised that Inception didn't get an editing nomination. For as much as I really loved the movie, the overall editing wasn't one of its major strengths and that's one reason that it really doesn't stand a chance for best picture.

I guess it all depends on your perspective. Having 10 nominations has allowed box office hits like Toy Story 3 and Inception to be nominated when they otherwise wouldn't. If that works to draw and retain more viewers to the broadcast, then they're going to keep doing it, no matter how silly it really is.

Quick question: Is Toy Story 3 the first instance of a sequel being nominated for Best Picture when its predecessors were not?

Depends on if you consider The Silence of the Lambs a "sequel". Other than that, I'm really not sure.

For the curious, Dogtooth was added to Netflix Watch Instant today.

Perhaps... but there's 10 nominations so the rules kinda go out the window. The Dark Knight more than likely would have been nominated had there been 10 nominations.

Also, Toy Story 3 is nominated for Best Picture and Best Animated Picture. I always thought it was one or the other.

It is one if she wants to have any chance of winning an Oscar. Every person nominated for Actress and not named Natalie Portman is basically attending the show to schmooze with fellow celebrities and nothing more.

(Even if Portman's performance is one of the least impressive in that category...)

They're trying to do what happened to 10-year-old Tatum O'Neill in Paper Moon. Tatum was in like 90% of the movie and they promoted her in the Supporting Actress catagory believing she had a better chance of winning. And she did.

Now that we see it in practice, 10 nominees for best picture is stupid. It makes the category unwieldy without any benefit. Does anyone actually believe that Inception or Toy Story 3 actually have a shot?

But it draws attention to those quaint underseen films!

In theory, if implemented properly, I'd appreciate the ten nominations. Not like this, though.

Totally agree. It's completely senseless to nominate films that have no real claim as the potentially "best picture" of the year, but are nominated simply to meet an arbitrary number of candidates. While it's true in most years that every one of the five BP nominees didn't come close to having an equal worthiness of being considered "best picture," it certainly seems a lot more legitimate than a ridiculously watered-down list of ten.

Add to that years like the past one, with very few genuinely outstanding films, and you end up with a list of BP nominees like this one, where the Academy was clearly scraping to fill out the nominee list. If they had been doing this in other recent decades, I dread to imagine some of the laughable nominations there might have been.

Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
The King's Speech
127 Hours
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
True Grit
Winter's Bone

Doesn't actually seem like scrapping to me. Any 5 of those, outside of Inception and Toy Story 3, could have been in the Top 5. Having popular movies like Inception and TS3 in there probably helps viewership a little as well, since they're popular movies with a lot of fans Hell the only one of those I didn't care for seems to be the fan favorite around these parts (TS3).

Good to see "Winter's Bone" get nominations.

I think Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, and Christian Bale will win.

Look at it this way: if there wasn't 10 slots, then we'd probably have pages of people bitching and moaning that Inception didn't get a Best Picture nomination. They're doing the internet a favor here.

Does anyone know how they determine how many animated features are nominated? Some years it's three and other years it's five. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

It depends on the number on entries, I believe they were 1 off from having 5 nominees this year.

Edit: Yup --

Academy rules allow only three nominees in Best Animated Feature in any year when there are just 8 to 15 submissions deemed eligible. Sixteen and over qualifiers trigger five nominations, which has happened twice (in 2002 and last year). But on November 15th, the Academy announced that only 15 films were in the animation race this year, even though 2010 was considered an exceptionally strong year for toons. Since two of the nominees are expected to be Toy Story 3 and How To Train Your Dragon, only one slot is open.
