Where the heck is SHUTTER ISLAND???? That film was definitely a top 5 of this year. RIDICULOUS that its not nominated.

And 127 Hours should have been recognized for Best Picture, and Best Director along with Franco's unreal performance.



The Comedy noms are laughably bad. The Tourist was panned by EVERY critic, as was Alice and Red.

Kick-Ass should have DEFINITELY been recognized.

Also missing: Extract. at least Bateman should have been nominated and the screenplay too. Though I would have also included it in best comedy category.

Red actually wasn't panned (though doesn't really deserve a nomination, I'll take it over shit like Cyrus though), in general it got similar review ratings to Shutter Island. Alice got mixed reviews. Extract was ineligable as it's both a 2009 film and pretty awful.

I haven't seen "The Tourist" or "True Grit" but I bet I'll find "True Grit" funnier. They should have put it forward as a comedy to get a nomination.

Was "Please Give" a 2010 release. That was probably my favorite comedy of the year.

Every year the GGs fail to let me down for their poor nominations, and I laugh at the angst shown of such snubbage, which, to me, has to be purposeful, just to get people to bitch/moan/groan about the snubs and create faux controversy.

Yeah, I was hoping to see something for Shutter Island. Unless the Academy has already forgotten it, maybe it'll land a couple of tech nominations. At least Score and maybe Art Direction. I was hoping Leo's performances from Inception and Shutter Island might have given him a shot, but it looks like he's fading.

What does everyone think of The Fighter? 5 nominations. I've only seen the commercials for it. I know how the Academy loves boxing movies. I wasn't expecting it to get that many nominations.

I'm planning to see it this weekend, but the buzz is high. If the Academy truly loves it, that momentum might be enough to get Wahlberg nominated. However, there's still competition for his spot, and possibly Gosling's, in the form of Jeff Bridges, Robert Duvall, Javier Bardem, and to a lesser extent, Leo.

Firth, Eisenberg, and Franco are pretty much locks, imo.

Bale and Leo were both excellent. The other actors did a good job, but they weren't really stand out performances.

I hardly even care about the AA's and they have a better track record than the GG's.

They have always been the retarded little sister of the AA's and sometimes they really go full retard and this year seems to be one of them.

Shutter Island got some pretty amazing reviews, from those who understood it. some even called it the masterpiece of 2010.

At best, Red was called "fun", but no reviews actual though it was a worthy film of substance.

Extract was very funny, in a subtle way, and had some terrific acting.

Just remember the GG felt Robert Downey Jr gave a better comedic performance in Sherlock Holmes than Matt Damon did in The Informant.

I have all the usual objections - The Golden Globes aren't nominations, they're party invitations, they pick bigger stars over those who deserve honors and they only nominate lesser-known actors if the buzz is undeniable.

I doubt many of the filmmakers take them that seriously either. Yes, the GG nominations can influence Academy votes through publicity, but by no means are they a big influence.

Still, the Golden Globes always put on a great show, and I'll be looking forward to seeing it.

The Golden Globes used to influence the Academy Awards because the show was before the nomination ballots were due. Now, thanks to a shortened season, the show is after the nomination ballots are due, which means that the influence of a Golden Globe win is reduced greatly.

Still when it comes to the final Oscar voting, the Globes will have been handed out, so voters in the habit of following the Globes will have their guidance.

But that won't help with the Actress race as Bening and Portman seem to be the two established front runners already. Interestingly, Portman has been the choice of the critics' associations except the two biggest --NY and LA.

If the Critic's Choice Awards (Jan 14) and the SAG Awards (Jan 30) both select the same actress, I think that will be a solid prediction of the Oscar winner.

This year gave us new movies from Nolan (Inception), Fincher (Social Network), Scorscese (Shutter Island), Aronofsky (Black Swan) and the Coen Bros (True Grit). As well as Jeunet (Micmacs, at least for US release), Denise (White Material, same), and to a lesser but notable extent Boyle (127 Hours), Coppola (Somewhere), and Wright (Scott Pilgrim). Definitely not the worst. Only Iron Man 2 really came out as a disappointment. Not a great year, but definitely not the worst.
