The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Wow, you had to feel sorry for his charater. He did not get the girl and he lost everything else, he truely became a lonely soul.
A friend of mine told me to watch the movie, so I look it up and it was coming out on DVD a few weeks later. After buying it and watching it, I was impressed with JW's performance, never seen him have a script like that before, very deep movie for a JW movie.

Wayne may not have had a lot of range as an actor, as far as playing different types of characters----but as far as his ability to deliver dialogue in a completely natural, effective manner, conveying nuances of emotion with great timing, and his physical presence---I think he was a very fine actor.

I had to vote for True Grit because it was the film that made me a fan. I was a kid when it came out and didn't want to see it. I fought with my parents over it because I hated westerns. Surprise, surprise, I went and had a blast. From then on I was a fan of the Duke.

As much as I love the look of the Searchers, The Man who Shot Liberty Valence is the defining movie of John Wayne's acting career. It may not be the cheery/happy ending cowboy film that he often made(The Comancheros, Rio Bravo, Rio Lobo, El Dorado) but it's his best film as an actor.

Red River is my favorite.
Yeah, it has a flawed ending (the original ending would've been better, but it wasn't filmed), but everything else about this movie is great, including what I think is John Wayne's best performance.

Very odd, as "a blast" would be the last term I would use to describe True Grit (especially for a kid), and it could probably be one of the most boring works of Wayne's career for a kid to break into westerns with. Not to mention it was an anti-Wayne performance that doesn't seem very appealing to a kid compared to his more standardizes western roles.

Yeah...as a kid...I found True Grit boring. Gimme John Wayne from Rio Bravo as a kid and I'd totally think he was the perfect Cowboy.

Yeah, but did it make you a fan of Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper? That's the effect it had on me. I was already a fan of the Duke.

At the time, Vincent Canby, the newly installed chief film critic at The New York Times, did a piece comparing THE WILD BUNCH, BUTCH CASSIDY and TRUE GRIT, with, of course, the greatest love going to BUNCH. (All came out around the same time. As did EASY RIDER.) I'm not sure I remember the gist of it, but I'm guessing the piece was all about "fin de siecle"/end-of-the-west westerns. There was a lot of that going around.

I may get blasted but i just watched my first Wayne film last night in True Grit.. Seeing the trailers for the remake got me thinking to myself "wow I've never seen this or any other JW film, maybe I should". Enjoyed it so next up tonight is The Searchers. Would love more suggestions for what should be next in my film discovery.

Just rewatched Red River last night on Netflix. I think that's my favorite. If you haven't seen Red River, definitely give it watch. Rio Bravo is a close second.

I love most of those movies. It's hard to pick - until I watch the brilliant performance he gave in The Shootist. That is an excellent movie and one of my all time favorites. Great cast, great script, great direction, and a phenomenal performance from John Wayne.
The Shootist is my favorite (and I think it's the best, too, for the reasons above).
