The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Its the epitome of the iconic spirit of Wayne being the most manliest man that ever lived on screen.

I don't care if I'm the only one who ends up voting for El Dorado. It's my favorite.

THE SEARCHERS, not only a western masterpiece, but arguably Wayne's most complex role.
If you'd seen it on the big screen, you'd be voting for it.

Re: favorite john wayne movie
The Quiet Man is hands down his best but it is also very different than most of his other films. I would put The Angel And The Bad Man in second place. And then many more at third. I have no idea why he won the Oscar for True Grit. Not a bad film just really not anywhere near his best. A special nod to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Wow, you had to feel sorry for his charater. He did not get the girl and he lost everything else, he truely became a lonely soul.
A friend of mine told me to watch the movie, so I look it up and it was coming out on DVD a few weeks later. After buying it and watching it, I was impressed with JW's performance, never seen him have a script like that before, very deep movie for a JW movie.

As you can tell from the choices, the man made so many quality films, it is almost impossible to just choose one. That said, I voted for The Shootist, as it was made during a time in the Duke's life where what was happening in real life, is pretty much reflected with his character on the screen.

I've always been partial to "In Harm's Way". His acting is basically what carries the movie for close to 3 hours (although Patricia Neal and Kirk Douglas help considerably). I always felt this was John Wayne's last great war film.

Re: Favorite John Wayne movie
Considering that half the titles listed are among my favorite movies, I was hard pressed to name just one.. especially since two of my favorites (Tycoon and Hellfighters) weren't on the list.
So I voted other.
However, if I absolutely had to pick one, I'd go with Hatarai!, although more for the appeal of the whole movie than just Wayne. The truly international cast is altogether terrific.
Liberty Valance is great, but it always seemed to be more of a vehicle for Jimmy Stewart than a John Wayne movie.
