Monsters (2010) dir. Gareth Edwards

After watching this new trailer, this movie seemed cool enough to warrant it's own thread. I'm getting a distinctly Cloverfield-meets-District 9 vibe from the promotional materials and footage shown. I'm a total sucker for monster flicks, and I'm hoping this turns out to be solid.

I like to see good work of this type done on a skeleton budget.

If it continues to look like good work I'll check it out.

Re: Monsters (2010) dir. Gareth Edwards

Here's a review (with spoilers)

Sounds good.

Spoiler:

OK this gets a strong 7.9 on my trait average scale that I just made up, but on an insanely low budget of something around $15,000 dollars, this film deserves everyone's attention. The plot: NASA accidentally solves border security with lightbright octopi from space. In the first 3 minutes of this film we learn that a probe carrying samples of alien life has broken up in reentry showering larges swaths of Mexico with debris that eventually manifests in giant octopus monsters. The militaries of the US and Mexico do their best to contain the "infected zone" and kill the monsters with heavy firepower. The story starts about 6 years after the monsters show up and the battle to keep the aliens at bay rages on. We're introduced to a photographer hoping to snap a picture of one of the monsters up close who gets roped into escorting the boss's daughter to the coast and back to her Fiancé' after she's injured in a monster attack. The pair, played by real-life couple Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able, are stuck south of the infected area on an increasingly lawless overland trip through central America trying to find a way back to the safety of the States. The post-apocalyptic feel of the areas destroyed by the monsters make for some of the most memorable shots in this film. The Director/Writer/DP/VFX Artist, Gareth Edwards has shot a really beautiful film that revels in guerrilla style shooting and constantly shifting focuses helping push the subtle urgency of the travelers' situation. The monster effects are believable and Edwards deserves due credit for some fun visuals but he successfully directs our attention to the human story rather than letting the monsters be the main character. This is not a traditional action sci-fi movie though there are certainly heart-pounding, jaw-dropping scenes of mayhem and military firepower; it's a character driven story set in a sci-fi disaster monster movie and it works. Don't go in thinking it is District 9 or Cloverfield. It was certainly not what I expected, but that turned out to be a good thing in this case.

Facts from the Director Q&A: -Filmed on a Sony EX3 with a Nikon 50 MM Lens -Used almost exclusively natural light except for a couple tiny LED lights for when it was pitch black -Effects were done in Adobe CS4, editing in Premiere -The majority of filming was shot with just a sound guy the director and the 2 main characters -Look for this to come out in Late October via Magnolia Pictures in the US and November in the UK

^ Sounds great to me. That's about what I was expecting. But knowing the budget on this thing blows my mind.

I realize there are many types of creatures in this film, but i have to say that the Giant monster genre is way undeserved in this day and age. It's good to see at least one is being released.

Looks like fun and I'll check it out. I just wish they'd stop using the quote whores at AICN to help promote it.

Re: Monsters (2010) dir. Gareth Edwards

Trailer looked sweet. I usually love movies like this. I didn't read the review because I didn't want to read any spoilers but I did see in the first line that the movie was made for $15,000. Is that right?

I, too, was getting a Cloverfield vibe from it, but Cloverfield was made for $25 million, which is also crazy low in this day and age, but what kind of movie can you make for $15,000?

I don't need Godzilla destruction and it doesn't need to be a $200 million bloated piece of shit, but I just don't see how you can make a monster movie for so little money. We don't need to see the monster constantly--Cloverfield did this brilliantly in my opinion. The monster showed up only briefly but when it did it was very impressive. But, again, Cloverfield cost $25 million. If this only cost $15,000 I can't imagine how we'll see the monster even once. I mean to be an effective monster movie, the monster at least has to be well done and be seen at least a couple times and that takes money.

In any event, unless this gets terrible reviews when it opens I'll see it.

Gareth Edwards apprently was the Director/Writer/DP/VFX Artist so i imagine he didn't take a big salary which probably help keep costs low.

Re: Monsters (2010) dir. Gareth Edwards

I watched this on OnDemand tonight.

I really wanted to like it, but I thought it sucked. I don't know if the movie was trying to establish some kind of deeper meaning but if it was, then I completely missed it.

I found it extremely boring, with boring and ridiculous dialogue and basically no climax. The creatures were somewhat cool, especially if the budget really was only $15,000 but there didn't even seem to be a point to the creatures.

It's basically a character movie but the characters are boring and lifeless.

I'd love to have my 10 bucks back.

I do too; it's basically Ghostbusters III although the original idea was much more sci-fi and action-y before Reitman came aboard. Still, it's a fun movie with a cool concept.

Re: Monsters (2010) dir. Gareth Edwards

Watched this the other night... I really liked it. I didn't find it boring because the world was so completely fleshed out. I actually didn't want it to end. It's very much a character driven film but the world is very interesting. I say watch it.

I would love to see a making-of on this movie.

Add me to the "This movie sucks ass" list. I knew before watching it not to expect a monster movie..so I was prepared. But the love story element sucked ass....so yeah.

Re: Monsters (2010) dir. Gareth Edwards

I liked it a lot. It was well directed, well shot, well acted. And I liked both the characters and the story.

Considering the budget and comparing it to what some other people put out with 10x the crew and money, it was kinda mind blowing.

Might be the only low-budget movie I've ever seen that didn't in any way seem low-budget.

Bravo I say!

Re: Monsters (2010) dir. Gareth Edwards

The problem is that even with low expectations, this movie just fails to deliver. It had a lot of opportunity but didn't jump on any of them.
