Are you saying it's not possible to control certain physical actions?

Just a little personal background, I had a cousin die from Heart Failure at 25, he was 350+lbs for many yrs, started losing the weight but by then it was too late. And heart transplants are only given to those of a healthy weight.

I have a friend who is also 350+, and I'm one of the only friends he hangs out with. He breathes heavy all the time, walking is a chore, If I had to guess I'd give him ten more yrs. We go out and he orders apps, dinner, beer, shots... etc. I have never pressed the health issue, I have always just been a friend that's there for him.

So please, none of this being judgmental stuff.

Re: Name the actors you lost some respect for once they got fat?

This thread is pretty ridiculous. I wish I had a lot more time to go all the way into it, but unfortunately I've been so busy at work these past couple weeks my DVDTalk time is suffering....

It's pretty rare that a major Hollywood actor becomes "obese." Baldwin is not an obese person... he carries some "man weight" now and as others have pointed out... this is what happens when we get older. Our bodies change, our metabolisms change... we get ill and yes, sometimes we just get lazy or slip into addiction (purposefully or not).

There also seems to be a lot of focus on action stars which, by nature of the role, generally don't have very long shelf lives. I find a lot of "young and cut" type actors to be much less interesting to watch than older actors with some lines in their faces... not in their sixpacks.

The OP mentions that he recently lost some poundage and, good for you, but this may possibly be why this issue came to your mind or why you are now ready to bring it to the attention of DVDTtalk?

Don't get me wrong, slobs are a turn off for me. But slovenly people come in many shapes and sizes. A skinny dude pounding 6 McDonald's burgers is just as unappealing as someone larger doing the same. When hygiene goes out the window, then I agree... it's disgusting.

Since you want to know about our porn prefs (like really, really seem obsessed with this, dude...)- amateur porn > professional porn... big girls aren't my thing, but I like a shape. I don't mind fleshy, but I've never really gone out or sought out extremely overweight folks. Heck, I used to only date those "way too thin scene girls" which thankfully, I have grown out of. That being said, some people do like a lot of meat... even those people are probably not attracted to people who don't take care of themselves. I don't know anyone who likes unkempt, smelly fat people.... though I am sure that's out there, too.

On a completely unrelated note:

Dear Lemmy's daughter,

a/s/l?

sorry, I saw the word legal... had to try

Of course I'm not saying that. But by assuming that every person who is fat got that way from being some lazy lardass who sits around stuffing his face all day is about as judgmental as you can get. Whenever we have a fat thread here, a bunch of people always start talking how "simple" it is to lose weight. If it were that simple, there wouldn't be a multi-bazillion-dollar diet industry. To assume that people who are fat are just lazy slobs is offensive. It's also one of the last tolerated prejudices there is, in case the kind of mean-spirited remarks such threads always bring out doesn't make that clear.

Lemmy, I salute you for telling your story. You're right, it's not easy. I admire you, from the bottom of my fat girl's heart.

So you can't think of one actor that you used to like but not anymore due to any change in their appearance - getting skinny, getting plastic surgery, getting a make-over, doing something funny with their hair, losing their hair, etc?

It's a safe assumption:

At an individual level, a combination of excessive caloric intake and a lack of physical activity is thought to explain most cases of obesity.

Re: Name the actors you lost some respect for once they got fat?

Oh Lemmy, you’ve made me smitten. Your childhood sounds similar to mine, except with a well intentioned military dad and a very Bi-polar mother. There were also a lot of nights where I was fended for myself when it came to something to eat. None of that structure stuff for me, no sir.

I was soft, awkward and a head taller than everyone else. I also had the same terrible experiences in school with being picked on. I was never beaten up, but I would have preferred a black eye over the incessant taunts. It’s true to the Seinfeld episode where Elaine says girls just pick on each other until someone develops an eating disorder.

My appearance didn’t really change until I was at least 18 years old. I didn’t change anything in regards to my eating or exercise habits, the chubbiness just dropped away one year and I was suddenly “hot.” That was both an entertaining and disturbing experience.

Since then my weight tends to fluctuate between a 10-15lb parameter. I do think weight issues are different for women just for the hormonal issues alone. Three years ago I was my heaviest in a long time due to health problems. The year following that I actually lost a lot of weight due to stress and was skin and bone.

Barring specific medical conditions and treatments, I can’t say that our weight is out of our control. However, I think we should give more thought to why someone might be over-weight. There’s usually a lot more to it than simply “people don’t care about themselves.”

I think that fat pig Dakota Fanning's weight has doubled since she started making movies

Compare to Christina Ricci, who I think weighs half of what she did when she got her start.

Re: Name the actors you lost some respect for once they got fat?

Oh, and...

As far as whom I would prefer to watch in porn, what does that have to do with respect? There are a lot of people I like, love and respect that I don’t want to sleep with. On the flip side I don’t really care whether the porn star I’m watching has interests outside her job.

You’re into what you’re into and I’m not going to begrudge someone for being “shallow” when it comes to their sexual/romantic partner. We’re entitled to our preference, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to look down on someone for not meeting mine. Other people don’t exist for my personal, sexual gratification.

Having said all that, I will admit to having fantasies about the likes of Bill Bailey, Hurley from Lost, Steve Buschemi, and others of equally questionable appearances.

Personally, I would prefer watching (reasonably) thin people have sex but I'm not sure how relevant it is to this discussion. Keep in mind that social perceptions of beauty change frequently. It wasn't that long ago that fat people were the ones who were considered beautiful and successful.

I have honestly never heard of someone going to see a movie because an actor in it lost weight. I usually go if the film is good. Is this serious?

Christain Bale's weight loss in The Machinist and then buffing back up for Batman Begins

Renee's weight gain in Bridget Jones Diary

50 Cent's weight loss in the upcoming Things Fall Apart

Tom Hanks' weight loss in Cast Away

Seth Rogan's weight loss (maybe buffing up? not sure yet) in the upcoming Green Hornet (although I was shocked how thin he already was in Funny People)

Matthew McConaughey's Reign of Fire, Dennis Hopper's Waterworld, John Travolta's From Paris with Love to see them with shaved heads

Jake Gylanhall's buffing up for Prince of Persia

Jared Leto's Chapter 27 for weight gain

George Clooney's Syriana and Matt Damon's The Informer for weight gain

Gwyneth Paltrow's Shallow Hall to see her in a fat suit

Robert DeNiro's Raging Bull for weight gain

Charlize Theron's Monster to see weight gain (and uglying up)

Remember those for example?

Besides the fact that people wanted to see the above films for the films itself, there were plenty of articles written about the physical change these actors went through, there were plenty of people talking on the streets about the physical changes of these actors, and there was plenty of curiosity of audiences wanting to see how these actors changed their physical appearance. This shouldn't be a surprise for anyone.

On a personal note, even with all the horrible reviews of Blade 3, I mainly wanted to see the movie just to see the massive buffing up of Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel. And the movie isn't all that great, but I only recommend it to see the dramatic change in the physiques of those two actors. Before those movies, they were both pretty skinny...

My life isn't so shallow that my levels of respect for famous people change based on their body types.

Regarding aging being a factor, it takes serious overeating to turn into a human ball.

Marlon Brando was already old and in regular shape in Superman.

Marlon Brando was excessively enjoying food when Dr. Moreau and The Score came around:

It's depressing what Brando turned into. His weight gain was his fault.
Jerry Lewis is another story - his weight gain is medical-related. It wasn't his fault, so there is no "respect" lost for Lewis.

The same goes for actors who have always been heavy. I never had anything against John Candy, John Belushi, Chris Farley - they were always big.

The Machinist comes to mind...

But to be fair, it's not really the same thing at all. But the Bale transformation for the role was a big reason why I wanted to catch it. And it sucked :/

Edit: Beat me to the examples (this is what happens when I run to get coffee and don't refresh the page). But this is an example of an actor changing him or herself for a role and not for personal reasons or reasons outside of the job.

Wait, you're saying that people paid good money for those movies (or even bothered to rent, Netflix) just to see the physical changes the actors made for these roles? Yeah, that's surprising to me.

I mean, there's always articles about movies in general, that what entertainment journalism does, so the weight gain/loss to me is just part of all of the other details that they report on (like who the actor fell in love with on the set). If I'm curious about the weight I just google it and read the article. I've never gone to a movie for anything but to see a good movie, everything else is extra.

Failing physical education is harder to do, than not do.

Biting someone's nose off is insane.

Posting pictures of your daughter in a forum where you yourself want to be anonymous, yet you are ok with showing her off is just strange.

But hey, I am far from normal.

Try running an hour a day for at least five days a week. That's what I do and my progress has been fantastic. I was at around 197 lbs (and at one point peaked at 205 lbs) and am now 185 lbs in just a few weeks.

BTW, since you say your daughter is both legal and an adult, is she single? If so, may I be invited to your next family gathering? If you require, I can provide character references and all the necessary urine sample and bloodwork results to prove that I am 100% drug free. However, if such questioning meets with your disapproval, please inform me with haste so I may put my running skills to use in the direction opposite of where you are.

that is true...only that they did their moronic, ignorant complaining in letters of magazines, newspapers, book clubs before the existence of internet...

How about "What is your favorite movie that starts with "The" and has a fat person in it?"
