According to the news, the person who won the action was an anonymous bidder on the phone. So if he bid on his own work, he'd know when the bidding was closed on the item. Maybe a cell-phone activated shredder?

Anybody in the room knew when it sold. It was announced. Someone working for him could hit a remote when the gavel came down.

Interestingly if you watch the video, right after the gavel comes down the auctioneer appears to press a button to the side.

New video from Banksy of a "directors cut" of the prank:

The beginning shows something that looks a lot more like a conventional shredder. At the very end, it shows a rehersal run where the frame shredded the whole picture.
