One of the bleakest, most harrowing American films I've ever seen. The opening sequence with Hopper is incredibly jolting. Hopper was an underrated director.

Apocalypse Now. My favorite performance of his from my favorite movie.

i love Easy Rider, but True Romance does it for me. his one on one with Christopher Walken are what Oscars were made for.

So Dennis Hopper stood out in Rebel Without a Cause and Cool Hand Luke? Seriously? He had two lines in the former, and (I believe) zero in the latter! These are included at the expense of River's Edge, Tracks, or any of the other films in which he, ya know, spoke? Also, someone might want to tell the writer that Hopper played Jordan Benedict III in Giant, not Bick Benedict. Sheesh.

Blue Velvet was an easy choice for me. Frank Booth is one of the greatest characters in the history of film.

Dennis Hopper at least makes Super Mario Bros. watchable. Far from my favorite performance of his though.

He's the ultimate villain in Speed. One of the greatest antagonists of the '90s.

Hell, he may have been in some stinkers but even then he could steal the show. One of the greatest losses to Hollywood in a long time.

Thanks for the list, visitor Q. I definitely have to check out Mad Dog Morgan after reading that glowing assessment from the Times! Curtis Harrington's Night Tide is highly recommended for fans of Carnival of Souls and other weirdly haunting midnite movies - it has a similarly low-rent atmospheric feel to it. Somewhat akin to a (admittedly self-conscious) arty episode of Twilight Zone, it makes for perfect late-night viewing.

Definitely True Romance, with Speed and Mad Dog Morgan in a tie for second.

No love for Tracks, eh? I'll admit it's pretty out there, but so is much of Hopper's work from that era.

ended up buying River's Edge today as i found it for cheap. I remember Glover saying at a Q&A i attended that it was one of the few movies of his career that he was truely proud of
