this looks fucking awesome...i think JJ has captured late 70's/early 80's Spielberg perfectly. so glad we're getting an ORIGINAL blockbuster this summer.

Nothing about the spot captured a Spielberg feel whatsoever aside from the music

100% disagree. The entire spot felt like we're getting the Spielberg we all came to know and love. It feels like this would've been released in the era of Close Encounters, E.T., Gremlins and The Goonies.

I hope the movie is at least more tense than any of those three were. The way it was hyped up before recently you were made to think it was a mix of science fiction and terror. Now I'm not sure what to think about this. Is it a monster movie mixed with drama surrounding a group of friends? Or is it drama focusing on the friends first and the monster or whatever it is simply being the motor that keeps the movie going? I guess I'm not as hyped up about this movie actually seeing that new trailer as I was when I first read the synopsis and saw the teaser months ago.
2) All four of the movies mentioned are genuine classics. I'd rather have a film on par with one of those gems than another mindless summer action film. 3) Super 8 will still have a lot of tension in it. I'm actually surprised you would think otherwise. The teaser was rather intense, and it's from J.J. Abrams (Alias, Lost, Mission Impossible 3, Star Trek). |

I don't think I'd call The Goonies a genuine classic. Perhaps amongst fanboys, but an absolute cinematic classic? Hardly.

Re: Super 8 (produced by JJ Abrams)
I would rather it lean more towards the monster feel than the feel good Goonies, E.T., Close Encounters or even Gremlins feel of those 80s flicks. I enjoyed them all and still do but unfortunately I'm not 13 years old anymore and want to see things more geared my horror tastes than teen dramas.

Re: Super 8 (produced by JJ Abrams)
Honestly...I think The Goonies is a fun movie and well made. Is it amazing? fuck no. I hated the film as a kid and I still do. I'm not entertained by it at all. I can see that it's well made and can be fun...but not for me. BUT on the grounds of quality? Sure..it's a good film..it's nowhere near being a cinematic classic.
Saying that, I might need to defend myself. I grew up in the Church of 80s action ass kicking and HK movies w/ some Sesame Street thrown in there. I didn't grow up loving some of the crap you guys love. The Goonies to me as a kid..was boring and stupid. I still think it's boring and stupid for me as an adult..but I can see it's filmmaking quality. My favorite film as 3 yr. old-9yrs old? Robocop. Yeah...that's the earliest memory of my life right there. Seeing Murphy's hand (1989) just..WOOSH! in slow motion... |
