Re: Summer 2010 Box Office Predictions & Discussion Thread
Iron Man 2 will barely pass the first film. Absolutely no audience growth at all. Makes me really interested to see how Thor and Captain America will perform. Is comic book movie fatigue starting to set in?
I think The Last Airbender will perform better than many are expecting it to. 2 weeks later than Toy Story, so thats good leeway, and Eclipse has such a specific demographic that I don't think it will hurt the films performance at all (and I think Eclipse will probably lose a good chunk of the non twi-fan crowd that went to see New Moon due to how utterly rotten and awful that film was).

Looking at this now, it seems that the big movie that snuck up on everyone was DESPICABLE ME. It's going to outgrossed "Shrek" domestically. Who would have predicted THAT happening? The answering, surprisingly, may surprise you! Somehow!

Haha. Wow... I was way off on almost everything. It looks like most of us weren't able to predict how dismal most returns would be. The only thing I really hit on the head was Eclipse, and that was easy to predict.

Just for comparison, the top 10 summer released movies so far US box office (as of Friday):
1 Toy Story 3 $402,280,518
2 Iron Man 2 $312,128,345
3 The Twilight Saga: Eclipse $296,649,934
4 Inception $254,193,415
5 Shrek Forever After $237,459,246
6 Despicable Me $226,394,925
7 The Karate Kid $174,861,447
8 Grown Ups $158,524,196
9 The Last Airbender $129,897,047
10 Salt $106,485,093
I think the big surprises for many were Sex & City 2, Knight and Day and A-Team not doing better. I'm really pleased Inception did as well as it has too. Toy Story 3 was pretty much a no-brainer for summer (and likely the year's) top movie.

Eclipse is going to outgross Inception (domestically and from the looks of it, internationally as well). How sad.
The Last Airbender did pretty well for such a hated movie. Looks like somebody out there must have liked it.
Karate Kid and Despicable Me look like the biggest pleasant surprises of the season.

Well, I more or less had the top 5 correct... wasn't that hard to predict though. I guess we've learned this yr that Disney and Bruckheimer can't just slap their name on anything and expect it to sell, and the stars of the past can't be expected to carry films anymore - even ones tailor made for their type of role. (Epics for Crowe, Action for Cruise).

Looks like the best hit I have/had will be my darkhorse, Expendables is close to 100 million, and might get close to 115 (105?)

I think the story of the summer is not which film(s) were a surprise hit, but just how many were underachievers and outright failures. Who would've guessed Expendables would beat out Robin Hood and a bunch of others...

Holy shit, regardless of what you're actually saying and the context it's used, this is the 1st thing that sounds like you have a damn logic that makes sense....at times.
