Re: Hobo With A Shotgun

I just finished it. Man there are so many good scenes in this movie. Popcorn's sig and what happens after it is definitely one of them. The entire hospital scene is just too good. Me and my wife watched this and she definitely thinks I am nuts for loving it so much.

I can't wait to see this. I absolutley LOVED Grindhouse, it is like one of my top 3 films EVER and if this is blowing it out of the water then I am in 110%. I was afraid it would be another Machete like fail but I am glad that all the right people are liking it

Re: Hobo With A Shotgun

Saw this at the Sundance premiere and thought it sucked. It has a good title, but the violence is so over the top its cartoony and the story nonsensical, even for a grindhouse pic. You can tell it was shot by rookie filmmakers on the cheap.

My mind is blown

You mean it looks like a grindhouse film?

I watched this on Xbox Live Friday night. Awful, Troma level shit. It wasn't even campy fun. I was embarrassed for Rutger Hauer. Do yourself a favor and save your money.

....well considering this has better filmmaking from what I remember Troma having...it sure as hell ain't as campy as Troma.

a clip featuring "the plague" has been posted...this is probably my favorite sequence in the film.

Re: Hobo With A Shotgun

I saw this movie back at Sundance and thought it was ok. Though I was pretty drunk so I cant remember much. Im probably in that video of the Q&A. The short they played before the movie was even better than Hobo with a Shotgun.

Gotta agree with Snake here. This movie fucking rocks!
It succeeds at exactly what it promises. Trashploitation at it's finest. It's like 'Street Trash' x10.

It's supposed to be ugly, Troma-like, over the top, cartoony, offensive, badly acted insanity. That's the whole damn point!
I loved every minute of it.

Re: Hobo With A Shotgun

This movie was incredible! It's exactly what you want out of an exploitation flick but never get. I also appreciate that while it is completely over the top, it never crosses into the "so weird that makes me uncomfortable" area. Perfect grindhouse flick. Rutger rocks!

Welcome to F*CKTOWN!

Does anybody know of this is going to show up on HDNet soon? It's a Magnet release, I believe.

Re: Hobo With A Shotgun

I was just trying to figure that out myself; based on what they've been doing with other Magnet/Magnolia stuff, they show films around the time of it's premier release; that new movie with Uma Thurman just had a premier and it's going to air this week and 13 Assassins is going to be airing around April 25th; I think early May?

So by that rationale, any shitty filmmaker can claim their film is supposed to be grindhouse and get away with whatever they want. Is Uwe Boll "trashploitation"? Maybe his stuff is supposed to be ugly, Troma-like, over the top, cartoony, offensive, badly acted insanity...

I get what they were going for, but the filmmakers were amateurs and it shows.

Re: Hobo With A Shotgun

Well Uwe Boll considers his movies serious and amazing art. So no.

A lot of exploitation directors were amateurs or made their debut in the genre.

But see, if it wasn't we'd just have another run-of-the-mill action, vigilante movie. And that's not what the makers set out to do.

It's difficult to define. The fans of this kind of movie and horror movies are the most inconsistent anywhere.

One movie is awful because it doesn't make sense, another is great because it doesn't make sense.
One movie is awful because the plot is weak and there's no explanation, another is great because the plot is weak and there's no explanation.
One movie is awful because it's badly made, another is great because it's badly made.

I know I'm part of the problem

See...I think you went wrong, Gunde.

I wouldn't at all compare this to Troma.

Re: Hobo With A Shotgun

I'm not a grindhouse guy so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Hobo did nothing for me. I liked the Tarantino/Rodriguez revival and had a great time with Machete, which is why I lined up for this one, but I recognize that those films are probably not what a purist would consider true grindhouse.

Hobo to me had a harder edge than what I'd come to expect from the modern offerings. A lot less emphasis on the humour and a lot more on the nasty. Judging by the reactions to the film I suppose this is closer to what people fans wanted. For me, I don't think I could like this film any less.
