While I found Avatar very entertaining and visually mind blowing, I have to say out of the 10 nominated it would be ninth in my choice for Best Picture, Blind Side being the last.
It's strange how the momentum has gone from one movie to another this year during the season. At first it looked like Up In The Air was the favorite, then Avatar, now it seems to have settled on The Hurt Locker. I wonder what it was that cause so much shifting?

Yeah, I don't know what happened to all the momentum Up in the Air had going for it. I absolutely loved that movie and I think it's just as worthy as The Hurt Locker to win Best Picture.

You know, Bullock wasn't mentioned ONCE in any of the year end critic's choice awards. In fact, Streep and Mulligan were pretty much neck and neck with the most wins and mentions. And yet, out of no where, just because "The Blind Side" is a 250M smash, Bullock's the one that is going to win. Why? Sure, we all know she will probably never be nominated for an Oscar ever again. But is that any reason to give her the award!?

What will hurt the Hurt Locker is people actually seeing the film in Hollywood (did $13 million at the box office in the summer, totally reliant on campaigning, not actually viewing experience of the film by the entire academy, while Avatar has been seen by a large percentage of the movie-going public, and in Hollywood), so I think it's got only a small shot at Best picture, but within the guilds, Bigelow might sneak one over her ex-old-man, though I wouldn't be surprised if Cameron gets Best Director either, it's a toss-up.

Hmmm...have the Avatar fans here started to change their tune? Quite a few people were saying it was the best movie ever. I'm really hoping the Academy is smarted than that. Films shouldn't (FIXED ) be "Best Picture" because of special effects alone. And that's the only thing that Avatar has going for it. Shouldn't have even been on the list.
I hope The Hurt Locker takes it but I'm thinking everyone is creaming their jeans over 3D these days, so it's going to go to Avatar.

Just got back from seeing this finally (in 3D FWIW).
It was Dances With Wolves meets The Last Samurai meets Starship Troopers with a little Inconvenient Truth sprinkled on top, all wrapped up in a package designed to appeal to 14 year-olds. The sensory presentation was so overwhelming and impressive that it did manage to overcome some pretty obvious flaws at times and really draw me in emotionally, but only in the kind of way that left me feeling like a cheap whore afterwards.
I'm glad I saw it. It is undoubtedly a peek into the future of cinema (for better or worse) but it is really only for the presentation itself I could really recommend it.

And i also agree with Roeper on the whole 'What are you wearing?' Bullshit. "Who are you drinking tonight?' Or "Who are you screwing tonight?' would be much more interesting.
