Got my ticket in IMAX 3D for Saturday the 17th. I can’t do Thursday or Friday night especially with getting up at 430am for work. I’m almost guaranteed to fall asleep, especially with the 192 minute run time. I need to be well rested.

When the first Avatar came out we were all in our late 20s and early 30s. In that thread we were probably talking about bringing our dates to the theater and catching the midnight showings.
In the sequel thread it’s all talk about not being able to hold our bladders and planning on early showing where we won’t fall asleep.

It just dawned on me that the trailer is at 2.39:1. Are we gonna get a repeat of the last movie where Cameron will suddenly change his mind and release it on home video open matte at 1.78:1?

‘Avatar 2’ Is So Expensive It Must Become the ‘Fourth or Fifth Highest-Grossing Film in History’ Just to Break Even

The first movie started the downfall of the theater industry and ruined the home video market for a decade. I hope these movies blow up in everyone’s face.

Article on Avatar by Jamie Lauren Keiles in last weekend's New York Times Sunday Magazine:
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/30/m...franchise.html
It offers a look back at Avatar’s initial cultural impact and gradual subsiding as it was replaced in the popular imagination by the Marvel Universe with the author providing as concise a sum-up of the franchise phenomenon as any I’ve read. There's a history of Avatar’s production, followed by an amusing account of the author's recent foray into the Avatar theme park in Florida, the author’s own erratic history with Avatar and a brief note about the new film.

I just got back from the Pandora land in Orlando and had a fun time. Long lines, but the Flight ride was worth it, and the food was great. I’m ready for an IMAX screening.

Edit: For some reason it’s not letting me post videos. I tried attaching a video of the sketch
The 'Avatar' team saw that 'SNL' sketch and designed a new font for the sequels

Was just one movie shot over all this time or did they do motion capture and shoot stuff for several movies? I am watching an interview with Cameron right now and it seems like they have three more movies that exist in a raw form.

“Hi, James Cameron here and today I’m coming to you from the set of the Avatar sequels — and behind me you can see our performance-capture stage. Today we’re capturing some stunt scenes filming some stunt scenes but our principal cast are all wrapped."

“So where we are right now, I’m down in New Zealand shooting, we’re shooting the remainder of the live-action. We’ve got about 10% left to go. We’re 100% complete on ‘Avatar 2’ and we’re sort of 95% complete with ‘Avatar 3.'”

In this interview from September 2022, Cameron talks about not necessarily directing Avatar 5. See the 4:05 mark:
From the transcript of that video, edited for clarity:
Look, if I can do them all, great, I'd love to, but something may come along that piques my interest, and I may feel that there's enough momentum with my team that they can do it [on their own]. So to me... there are no decisions being made there. You know I've already, completed, almost completed, [Avatar 2], we've shot [Avatar 3] we shot part of [Avatar 4]. I love them all, I'd love to go all the way through the end of the end of five, but you know I'm not getting any younger, and none of us are. So I want the people to pay the bills on this, and it's a very high bill, [I want] Disney to feel like this is an open-ended thing.

It's so weird seeing this movie get nominations for all sorts of awards before anyone gets to see a single review. Maybe that sort of thing happens frequently but I can't recall.

TVs had to have 3D on them because everything needed to be in 3D, even it made no sense. Drove up the cost of TVs until manufacturers started to realize that this wasn't the future (like it wasn't the future in previous decades) and it was wasted effort to have things in 3D.
