A Dangerous Method (dir. Cronenberg, starring Viggo Mortensen, Knightley)
Col. Landa to play Sigmund Freud? sounds fantastic. Cronenberg's been on a great run recently, and I'm very eager to see Waltz's next performance.

THE TALKING CURE: FREUD, CHRISTOPH WALTZ, KEIRA KNIGHTLEY, DAVID CRONENBERG
by Edwige Andersson | Jan 12, 2010 | ShareThis | 2 Comments
Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley has been set to star opposite Cannes Film Festival winner Christoph Waltz in The Talking Cure, a new film about Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, according to the website moviepilot.de.
Waltz, 53, has received numerous accolades in the United States for his performance as a vicious, multi-lingual Nazi in Inglourious Basterds (right), Quentin Tarantino’s World War II drama that is a likely Oscar contender. The actor will be playing Freud himself, widely respected by some as the father of modern psychoanalysis, widely denigrated by others as a pseudo-scientist.
Knightley, the female lead in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and the star of Pride & Prejudice, will play one of Freud’s patients. With David Cronenberg (A History of Violence) at the helm, The Talking Cure is based on the play of the same name by playwright and screenwriter Christopher Hampton, among whose credits are Dangerous Liaisons, Total Eclipse, and Atonement.
In 1962, Montgomery Clift starred as Freud in a film directed by John Huston from a screenplay by Charles Kaufman (not to be confused with the Charlie Kaufman of Being John Malkovich). Susannah York co-starred as one of Freud’s patients. Jean-Paul Sartre initially contributed to the screenplay.

Also, apparently Michael Fassbender is set to play Carl Jung, or have some other involvement in the film. No idea as to an expected release date yet.

This sounds like a perfect extension of Cronenberg's already incredibly diverse filmography.
The most anticipated film of this calendar year (or next) for me.

As a Cronenberg fan I have interest this.
But the casting of Christoph Waltz ensures that I will see this in the theater; you know, if we get it here.

I hope this gets off the ground as I it sounds interesting and I'm a fan of anything Cronenberg does...also, it may help bring the 1962 film out on DVD.

When I saw that the title was The Talking Cure and the director was Cronenberg, I envisioned something completely different. But this sounds promising!

Looks like Christoph has waltzed out of the production.
But he's being replaced by Viggo.
Sigmund Freud Gets Cast: Christoph Waltz's Loss Is Viggo Mortensen's Gain
By TIM ADLER
Remember Mike Fleming’s story last month about Christoph Waltz, who won the Best Actor Oscar on Sunday for his portrayal of a Jew-hunting Nazi, being lined up to play another psychopath in Water For Elephants? Well, it turns out that in going for that role, he dropped out of playing one of the most influential Jews in history. Waltz was going to star as Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg’s The Talking Cure, due to start filming on May 17 for 10 weeks. Based on the play by Christopher Hampton, the pic is about the conflict between Freud and his pupil Jung.
Waltz’s departure left the producers scrabbling for a replacement. There were fears they would have to scrap the German/Canadian co-production completely. “You’d have thought Waltz wouldn’t want to be typecast as a sadist,” one of the filmmakers grumbled to me. Happily, Viggo Mortensen, who worked so memorably with Cronenberg on Eastern Promises, has just replaced Waltz. Mortensen will star as Freud opposite Michael Fassbender as Jung. Keira Knightley will play Sabina, a disturbed young woman brought to see Jung by her father. Jung and Sabina have an affair, and the producers are promising me “lots of spirited sex”. (Viggo had that other spirited sex scene with Maria Bello in Cronenberg's A History Of Violence.)

Too bad about the Waltz news, but
to Viggo stepping in.
On a side note, I'll take the Cronenberg/Mortensen team-ups over Scorsese/DiCaprio and Burton/Depp anyday of the week.

I love Cronenberg and Viggo, and I'm positive he'll do a great job in the film (I can already see him with the beard), but I was so so SO looking forward to seeing Waltz do this. Oh well.

Yeah, as much as I love Mortensen, I'm "aw, shit" all over this news. Damn it, can a mod edit the Thread title?

I'll watch anything Cronenberg does, so casting is usually irrelevant. Glad to see he's working with Viggo again. Too bad about Waltz. I think he would have been great.

Man, I just now started following this thread and got so psyched to see Walts as Freud.
However, I do like Viggo Mortensen and every movie he makes with Cronenberg seems to turn out well, so I still have confidence. I feel a movie about Sigmund Freud is about due and Cronenberg seems the right man for the job.
Credit where it's due, Mortensen is definitely not shying away from roles that will test him as an actor for more action/ typical leading man type roles.

Publicist: Market tracking indicated that The "Talking" Method sounded boring. We can pep it up by dropping in the word "Danger"
I say just put that picture of Portman on the poster, then sit back and rake in the bucks. I'm a tit man and I still want to hit that "stacked like a 12 year old" shit.

Ugh. I loathe Knightley, but I'll still have to see this because it's Cronenberg.

Cronenberg and Viggo? I'm there. As much as I loved Christoph Waltz in Basterds, Viggo is one of my favorite modern leading men, and his track record with Cronenberg, is a casting replacement I approve.
