A lot of these lists are ridiculous. The Proposition? Royal Tenenbaums? District 9? Stardust? 300? Hannibal? And so on and so forth. Like others have said, these movies might belong on some people's personal 'least favorite' or 'most disappointing' lists, but to claim many of these films rank among the worst of the decade seems so bizarre that it almost has to be a joke.

I use the same criteria that Roger Ebert said years ago when making his worst lists, there is a lot of crap that is out there, but the worst list is a list of (somewhat) ambitious films that fail. Gene Hackman is my favorite actor, there was a lot of talent involved in Royal Tenenbaums, and it was one of the most miserable experiences I have ever had in a theater. I stand by my list.

Bear in mind, of course, that I have not seen a great many of this decade's releases and that I am very forgiving of films. For instance, even though something isn't Lawrence of Arabia-good, I can still get into it as long as I can find an "in." These films, for various reasons, just didn't do it for me:

The Day After Tomorrow - My biggest complaint is that the film suggests that the government officials should have heeded the warnings of the scientists. However, those warnings would have had to have either come--and been acted on--much sooner than the time span of the film or they would have had to come with much more specific information to have been helpful anyway. Doesn't help that it's very long and I simply don't care about any of the characters enough to be concerned with who might die. Might have worked better sheerly as a survival story and not a blatant advertisement for eco-fear.

Sin City (Theatrical Cut) - After the first half hour of being impressed at how faithful the film version was, it became fairly monotonous. The images were all in black, white or gray and even the voices were pretty steady throughout, partly lulling me to sleep. I much preferred the DVD release that offered each story individually; I found this much easier to get into.

Die Another Day (After Bond returns to London) - The first half was actually one of the better Bond movies to date. But man, that second half turns into one of the worst video game adaptations ever.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry - My wife enjoyed it enough, and our friends loved it. I barely chuckled, and was reminded that Kevin James simply does not entertain me. It might have been funny ten years earlier, but being released after we've already had so many gay-friendly films and TV series, it just seemed to have missed the party.

Star Trek: Nemesis - I'll tell you where this film went wrong: It tried to be something that The Next Generation wasn't. It was touted as another Wrath of Khan (complete with major character, um, events), but it was just too forced. Nothing felt right at any point in this story, be it the complete disregard of Worf's story arc from Deep Space Nine (ambassador of the Klingon Empire one moment; just another Enterprise security chief the next?), Admiral Janeway giving Picard his orders or Picard then tearing around a desert planet in a dune buggy, wearing Oakleys.
