Seriously, and that should be everyone's answer in this thread, along with telling everyone who doesn't agree with them that they have terrible taste.
I don't even know what they point of this discussion is anymore. It's all subjective and who cares if someone likes something you hate?

Could this thread just be closed? All it is is a back and forth about peoples tastes. No one is ever going to come to a agreement beyond "Let's agree to disagree". It's boring and an eye sore.

all films are great all the time.
Everyone is always right all the time.
nothing is bad, ever.
If you loved 'The Tooth Fairy', you will still be allowed to vote, marry, or produce offspring.
Chocolate taste like Vanilla IMO.
Again, I value opinions but taste can be a slippery slope... Pretty soon all of you will be agreeing with my 2nd to last statement too.

With more and more exposure for films, more blurbs on posters, I've also found that many people also become predisposed to dislike films they feel came out of the marketing machine. So, in a way, many people might see you as a sheep yourself, only one that makes a decision, even a subconscious one, to NOT like a film.
I think that's probably one thing we can agree on, Blu Man.

Sure, I wish some films had better exposure but hey, it happens.
I will admit, there are some films I have hated even before I seen them.
The Fast and the Furious was one of them. I didn't need to see it to know I hated it.
For the most part though, I try to keep at least a somewhat open mind.
I can be surprised, though, that's for sure. Good or bad

Re: have I gone crazy, why does everyone love crap?
That's like playing whack-a-mole. The "Is there an objective standard for judging the quality of a film" argument is one that will always pop up on internet movie forums.
Yep. But that's the whole point - chiding other people that the movies they like are "cliched" or "derivative" or "crap" - while claiming the ones you like are "unpredictable" or "dark" or "edgy" (the elements that seem to make a film great these days - meh). It's the whole fun of forums - if we stopped questioning other peoples' tastes, the internet might die
.
If we just agreed to disagree, what would be the fun?
That only applies to Commando.
Rob Zombie's Halloween, my friend. Rob Zombie's Halloween.
All it is is a back and forth about peoples tastes.

Correction: Rob Zombie's Halloween II.
Also, for everyone getting up in arms about foofighters7's comments, don't forget, you're dealing with someone who clearly loves The Foo Fighters. Need I say anything more about this person's taste?

You could argue they are not, and that is fine.
I never said taste wasn't subjective. I am an even bigger fan of Tom Waits, and believe me I have had arguments about his merit as well, but the point is I have at least stood up for what I like. Standing up and giving a reason as to why your taste is your taste is the point of forums, isn't it?
It seems to me that people just like saying
"hey ____ is great!".
"Really? I thought it was ____"
"Hey, It's my opinion that it's good, it's your opinion that it wasn't, lets leave it at that!"
No one seems to want to back up what they are saying in any way. No matter what I think or not, just tell me why movie A, that I think is crap, isn't?????
I swear, has anyone ever debated anything?
I want someone to prove to me that my theories about film A are off, wrong, misplaced hate, lost the point, actually awesome...ANYTHING!
I realize, as I have said MANY TIMES!, that opinions are great, taste is subjective. I have said that, I for one, like a few films that I know wouldn't be on many Top 10 lists, but I would at least try to argue the points as to why I like it, as opposed to saying "That movie made me happy" and leaving it at that.

Re: have I gone crazy, why does everyone love crap?
Well if someone says "it brought back a sense of wonder when I was a child" or "the film made me laugh" is that enough? If said movies don’t elicit the same response in someone else, no one is proving anything to anyone. If I said "I love Avatar because it took me to a new world that I had never seen before and really enjoyed the effects" but that isn’t the way someone else viewed it, it doesn’t matter how many times I say it, they will not see it. In fact, they may just reply "well you have shitty taste because the movie sucked". At that point, why bother continuing to debate?

Very true, and I would argue the point that they are still one of the best straight ahead rock bands still playing today.

Millions upon millions of people seem to absolutely LOVE "Forrest Gump". I think it's one of the steamiest turds of the 1990s, a film so epic in its vileness that it has ushered in a new Dark Age of Stupidity for the very culture that seems to elevate it to near sainthood. But I don't need (nor want) anyone to justify their love of "Forrest Gump"; that's THEIR thing. It doesn't make me any less secure of my 1000% correct assessment of that particular turdburger.

Discussion and debate is fine and good; that's what brought us here in the first place. But when it turns into the realm of "People only like AVATAR because they're sheep/tricked/manipulated/afraid to say they really HATED it", the debate/discussion has taken a sharp turn down Douchetard Lane.

Re: have I gone crazy, why does everyone love crap?
totally agree!
It seems people can be practically 'tricked' into liking some films.
Yes, I know many truly like Star Trek, Avatar, etc. BUT, I also think a good portion of people think "I'm being told this is great, so therefore, it must be".
They may also be the type that are easily impressed and will pass off on substance for 'shiny' things.

However, it certainly explains why some people liked Transformers 2.

We're talking about opinion and subjectivity because that's the topic you presented us!
So, I follow Roger Ebert on Twitter, and he has sent out messages several times recently saying this has been an incredible year for film. He has even gone so far as to make comparisons to 1939 (not sure I'd go that far, but anyway ...). Yet, this man, who I can almost certainly guarantee knows a lot more about movies and has probably seen considerably more movies than you, must certainly be stupid, have really bad taste or has been mightily tricked by many people because he doesn't agree with you. Yeah, whatever. I'm not even saying I agree with Ebert, but I certainly respect his opinion and acknowledge his expertise.
And I must say that you basically lost me when you admitted that you decide to hate some movies before you even walk into the theater. And also that you will stand by that hate even if you haven't seen the movie.
Plus, you rail on the big bad marketing machine, but then say marketing is needed and that films should market themselves. Well, films aren't alive, so they can't market themselves. They need a marketing team, and of course they are going to create a marketing campaign that will make it look good. This is a business!
I'm not saying this to be argumentative, but why do you care so much about what other people think or feel about anything?

BTW, I accidentally hijacked this thread, I think.
I am sorry to the Thread Starter, I do wish he would come back in and give more of his thoughts.
clockworkorange- I didn't start the thread.
oh and Roger Ebert, I'm sure, has lost so many brain cells from his near death experiences that I cannot fault him much.
Yes, of course, Roger Ebert has seen MANY MANY MANY more films than I. He has his rights, just like everyone else, but I also find him to be lost and confused these days with his likes and dislikes, or maybe he is just pandering to the public consensus now. I don't know.... Wait, who the hell brought up Roger F'ing Ebert Anyways??? hahaha
When did I "rail" against the big bad marketing machine???
Didn't I say the exact opposite?
I must say, I do find it sad that movies like Avatar that are made in an orgasm of money, have so much cash to throw at selling it to the public.
I do wish smaller films could be marketed better, at least giving the public the knowledge that it is out there.

I was the one who brought up Roger Ebert to show that there are people with informed opinions who disagree with you or the OP or whoever and asking if that makes his taste crap as well. I got excuses about his health. I don't always agree with the man but however many brain cells he's lost, I'm sure he still knows more about films than you or I. Convenient that you can say his tastes are now lost and confused when you don't agree with him.
A movie like Avatar is a major investment. It cost a ton of money, so it stands to reason the studio would toss some more money its way to make sure it gets some return on investment. At least part of the reason smaller films aren't marketed more aggressively is because there isn't as much money at stake. Makes sense to me, even though I'm not typically the type who loves big blockbusters.

I am yet to see Avatar and probably won't until it reaches blu-ray, but I love that it has added the word "avatards" to our pop culture!
from the Urban Dictionary:
2. Avatard
James Cameron fanboys who ejaculate with out physical stimulation at the mere thought of the movie Avatar (2009)

So very true.
