Re: So...what does your "Top 10 of this Decade List" look like?

1. Requiem for a Dream
2. Mulholland Dr.
3. Minority Report
4. Traffic
5. City of God
6. Pan's Labyrinth
7. Ratatouille
8. Dancer in the Dark
9. Frost/Nixon
10. Tell No One

Sorry...
11. Maria Full of Grace
12. The Wrestler

I'm sure 5 years down the road I'll have some to add to the list - I haven't seen near enough to really make a comprehensive list, but that's what I love about all these lists... they remind me what I need to see!

The above list is intended to illustrate my thoughts on which films were the best of this past decade; the list would have been different had I listed my favorites.
I really did enjoy Persepolis, but the problem for me was that I watched it right after reading the original graphic novel. It was too much of an abridgment, I suppose, that it lost some of the charm of the printed page. I understand the cuts that were made, and they were probably all very sensible omissions for the sake of a decent run time. Still, it just felt like too much of a highlight reel. I wish they'd had the confidence to do a more complete adaptation of each of the two volumes, rather than a singular adaptation of the comprehensive story.

Impossible to say.

'Hero' would be high on my list. A damn near perfect movie.

I've been meaning to revisit A.I. I've only seen it once, during its theatrical run, but I didn't care for it. Perhaps I wasn't in the right state of mind to appreciate it at the time.

5. L'enfant
6. The Triplets of Belleville

"The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"

I've seen that movie on a few poster's lists now and I had never heard of it. I'm now curious.

Re: So...what does your "Top 10 of this Decade List" look like?

For now I'll list by year:

00: Requiem for a Dream
01: Waking Life
02: Infernal Affairs
03: Mystic River
04: Team America: World Police
05: The New World
06: United 93
07: There Will Be Blood
08: Slumdog Millionaire
09: Inglourious Basterds

This will change every day if I continue to think about it. Some of these probably wouldn't make my top 10 if I added more than 1 from the same year, but that will take a little more time.

It might be the best thing Spielberg ever does. People tend to crap on the last act of the film, but thematically I find it incredibly important and the film would make little sense without it. But considering your views on a film like UP where you thought the Dogs were distracting (I don't agree and actually love the dynamic they introduce in the film, another great reflection on the themes, as well as providing the best laughs in the film), the three different story types AI pulls together probably won't work any better for you a second time around.
