Re: The box office flop of the year?
In late 1997/early 1998, pretty much EVERYONE was interested in Cameron's Titanic. After it dethroned Star Wars as the top box office grosser, the nerds turned on it. Then after it cleared its billions and grabbed 11 Oscars, the backlash kicked in hardcore.
To imply that "few men" were interested in the movie is just silly, revisionist thinking.

It was word of mouth that made this the blockbuster not the media reviews.

It's like when the turdburger Star Wars prequels came out and got RIPPED by critics, and the nerds came back with "Oh the ORIGINAL Star Wars movies got bad reviews too!!!"
Umm... no they didn't. They were remarkably heralded as cinematic breakthroughs (all except Jedi, anyhow, which still got good reviews but nowhere near the first two).

Re: The box office flop of the year?
The original star wars received plenty of bad reviews. Plenty. Mostly the secuels. They received (mostly the first one) many very good reviews, but plenty of the other ones. I was there. Star wars even got nominated for best picture.
I respect what you say about Titanic, but to say that the new star wars movies were ripped by the critics is absurd. Very few were enthusiastic, and even the good ones were very lukewarm, but they received many, many very good reviews. Even if you go to rottentomatoes, youŽll see that none were revieved under 60 %. Not even phantom menace. And it doesnt matter how well or bad you think rotten represents critics, that does not justify the labell "ripped by critics".
There was a lot of nastyness, and some hated them with a passion, but i rememember seing non-fans absolutely RIVETED by them, glued to rhe screen. And many people were very enterteined by them.
IŽm not a fan boy. The only Lucas movie i really like is American Graffiti. But, frankly, i dont know where the hell al this "Star Wars precuels was UNIVERSALY DESPISED" nonsense comes from...

I just want to clarify that if I happened to say anything about Avatar being a flop, surely I was referring to M. Night Shyamalan's Avatar: The Last Airbender (and they have dropped "Avatar" to avoid confusion). Yeah, that's the ticket.

That's a popular conception, but AVATAR wouldn't have been the worldwide hit it was if it was only teen boys going to see it. (In that case, GAMER would be almost as big a grosser.) I know plenty of adults who don't go to the movies much or don't talk about movies much who all went to see AVATAR. It was a cultural phenomenon that tended to cut across age, race, class and sex lines. It's rare to find a movie that can do that. That's why it's the top grosser of all time, whether I like it or not. I don't see AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER becoming that kind of phenomenon.
