Wow, I am shocked to come into this thread and find the same two people cluttering up the Avatar thread now predicting Avatar to be the biggest flop ever. Shocked!
I will never see a penny of the gross, but please Jesus let it make a bajillion dollars just to shut these people's mouths.

Avatar won't be a huge flop. It's a guaranteed 100 million. Will it disappoint? More than likely, but I'm sure financially it'll work out in the end. And it won't hurt Cameron.

That's a popular conception, but TITANIC wouldn't have been the worldwide hit it was if it was only teen girls going to see it. (In that case, TWILIGHT would be almost as big a grosser.) I know plenty of adults who don't go to the movies much or don't talk about movies much who all went to see TITANIC. It was a cultural phenomenon that tended to cut across age, race, class and sex lines. It's rare to find a movie that can do that. That's why it's the top grosser of all time, whether I like it or not. I don't see AVATAR becoming that kind of phenomenon.

$100 million against a $300 million budget isn't a very good showing. Someone just lost $200 million.

It is. They are going live action with it.

I personally thought the story kinda sucked, but then again I expected to go in and see a movie about the actual history of the boat. Don't kid yourself, teen girls helped the movie in the same manner many guys helped Star Wars over and over again. It's a combination of right movie at the right time.

In case you were unaware, the reason TLA doesn't have the word "avatar" in the title is to avoid confusion with the Cameron film. They probably don't want confusion with the original Delgo either.

Funny People didn't do so well.
Saw the Unrated cut, which runs even longer, and absolutely loved it, one of my tops of the year. This film will definitely find an audience on DVD. Can't believe I missed it in theaters.

If it was families, it was families drug kicking and screaming. I know few men, and fewer kids, who were that interested in Cameron's Titanic.

It wasn't just teenage girls... but it was primarily females of all ages. My wife saw it at least twice (once by dragging me to it) and maybe more, and so did most of her friends.

To imply that "few men" were interested in the movie is just silly, revisionist thinking.

I saw Titatic 3 times in the theaters. I was 11 at the time - I saw it once with family, once with friends, and once as a school group.
Say what you want but it was a cultural phenomenon of the 90s. Looking back on it now I still like some parts of the movie for the historical aspect but back then before the internet was king, a lot of people were seeing it multiple times in theaters.
