Painful.

A total train wreck

Racist, juvenile and nonsensical.

[A] sorry mess, a mangy, flea-bitten comedy of Daddy Day Care caliber.

It is an irredeemable affair.

...a morass of cliche, crotch shots and utter disregard for both logic and the audience. Walt Disney and poor Bernie Mac must be turning over in their graves.

Old Dogs seems to have lingered in post-production while editors struggled desperately to inject laugh cues. It obviously knows no one will find it funny without being ordered to.

So wretched that it should be unceremoniously put down.

If Old Dogs isn't the absolute worst movie either star has appeared in, it's close enough to count.

Insipid, predictable, broad comedy mixed with Disney Family Values makes for one exasperating sit.

This is good enough for me. I won't be seeing this thing.

Re: Old Dogs (John Travolta and Robin Williams)

So I just watched this...don't ask...and I read in the IMDB trivia that this was supposed to be R rated and 107 minutes. It didn't test well so they cut it to 88 minutes and made it PG. They also released it via Disney and not Touchstone to make sure people knew it was a family film.

How on earth was this ever a R rated film at one point? It had family comedy written all over it.

Also, has there ever been a film edited from a R to a PG. Caligula maybe?

In the seventies Saturday Night Fever (another John Travolta film) was such a hit that they recut a "family friendly" PG version just to cash in on the family outing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_Fever

Two theatrical versions of the film were released: the Original R-rated version and an edited PG-rated version.

The R-rated version released in 1977 represented the movie's first run, and totaled 118 minutes.

After the success of the first run, in 1978 the film was re-issued to a PG-rated version and re-released during a second run to attract a wider audience. The R-rated version contained profanity (the word fuck was used 76 times, nudity, drug use and a rape scene, all of which were de-emphasised or completely removed from the PG version.

The retooled PG-rated version totaled 112 minutes, and featured some deleted content. Numerous profanity-filled scenes were replaced with alternate takes of the same scenes that substituted milder language, initially intended for the network television cut. Other PG-inappropriate scenes were simply shortened or deleted. To maintain runtime, a few deleted scenes were added (including Tony dancing with Doreen to "Disco Duck" and Tony running his finger along the cables of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, Taking Stephanie home, Tony's father gets his construction job back, and an extended scene is when Tony talks to Stephanie on the intercom before entering her apartment in Manhattan).

Yeah all I could think of was SNF. We had the PG cut on VHS back in the 90s...hell my mom didn't remember that it was R.

Serious? I actually just watched this last week and could not imagine this as an R rated movie. And apparently neither could the producers.

Re: Old Dogs (John Travolta and Robin Williams)

I'm not sure I believe the imdb trivia on this one... It's possible that it may have been conceived as an R-Rated Touchstone comedy, then repurposed over to Disney prior to production, but I seriously doubt that it was ever shot, edited, and tested as an R.

I agree with you. It might have been written as a 'R' comedy but there is no way it was shot and then re-edited to a 'PG' movie.

Excalibur.
The movie was originally put into theatrical release simultaneously in both its PG and R-rated formats in the USA. Most home video versions are the R-rated one, but TV and movie channels show the PG version. The R-rated version features a few more minutes of graphic sex and violence.
