20th Century Fox buys the James Bond franchise???

...There is no word in what state this leaves ‘Bond 23,’ though, with MGM/Sony still backing the production side, this bit of news shouldn’t cause much if any kind of delay. The film is still tentatively scheduled for release in 2011.

I hope this isn't true. I don't like 20th Century Fox, and I don't want to see MGM bite it, either, so the idea of them selling off their sure-fire, decades-old cash cow is depressing.

That would really really suck. I hope that's just interweb rumorz™ because Rothman would fuck that franchise like a tender chicken.

Tom Rothman, the current head of Fox, has a tendency to micromanage and interfere with Fox's flagship properties. During his tenure he has rushed the Fantastic Four into production and run it into the ground and destroyed the X-Men franchise by putting release dates before talent, among other "business decisions". The idea of him getting his hands on the Bond films, especially after their successful restart, could very well be worrisome.

Please new actor for James Bond. Get back Pierce & go back to classic Bond. Gadgets, cheesy one-liners, over the top stunts. No more of this moody one from the past 2.

Yeah, not sure many would consider Casino Royale bad.

I think Craig is fantastic and they can include those things in the current run.

I'll agree with that completely, even though there was a mixed reaction to Quantum of Solace I really enjoyed it, hopefully EON have the balls to bat him off and leave them alone to make the Bond films as they see fit without his interference.

2 important things to note:

marketing and distribution at 20th Century Fox

MGM/Sony still backing the production side

Re: 20th Century Fox buys the James Bond franchise???

Then again, there are several rights ownership issues involved. Barbara Broccoli and her stepbrother Michael Wilson could conceivably pull a page out of their dad Cubby's playbook and tie things up in court until the ownership situation is to their liking. Which could, of course, mean another Licence to Kill-Goldeneye lull. As far as I understand it, Eon Productions owns half of the Bond rights, and MGM bought Harry Saltzman's half in the 1970s. (Eon still owns their half, right?)

Ok..so Sony makes them but Fox puts them out. Does this mean that Fox has "the power" to fuck with the cut of the films.

Not usually. Unless they are putting up some of the production money, distribution companies could only really make "strong suggestions" about the cut of a film, so they don't have any real pull. I doubt Sony would let them dick around with their franchise.

The original post says that the deal is for marketing and distribution, not production. Fox currently owns home video rights for most Bond movies. The Broccoli family owns the rights to Bond and I am sure will continue to make the movies however they please without outside interference.

Like the poster above said, Fox currently owns video rights as I've been reaping the rewards of working on the studio lot store.

I say it's not like there's going to be a lot of change. Business as usual. Hope they keep Craig as I really enjoyed the latest two.

I'll give you, QoS was weak, but nothing in the Brosnan era can even touch Casino Royale.

Really? Weird. I think Goldeneye is easily the best of the Brosnan Bonds but Casino Royale still pisses all over it.

The end of QoS hinted (the ridiculously cheesy desert hotel sequence) at them getting back to that grind in Craig #3.

Re: 20th Century Fox buys the James Bond franchise???

Personally i really grew tired of the gadgets and promotions all over the movies. Brosnan could have been great...but he was never allowed to be. His storylines were pretty awful. Goldeneye was the best...but even that was pretty bad. Brosnan just seemed to play the character too smugly for my liking. It felt like he was trying to recapture Connery. But he was better than Moore and Lazenby. But for my money Daniel Craig is the best followed by Connery and then Dalton. Timothy Dalton played Bond great in License to Kill and this was a real precursor to the Craig movies. Same kind of character. Viscious and cold most of the time. But Die Another Day was just such an awful awful movie and i thought after that the series really needed huge changes. Stupid gadgets, terrible bad guy, god awful lead song (All Brosnans movies had terrible songs though)...it was just sooooooooo stupid. Casino Royale was the best movie in the series since Goldfinger and From Russia With Love. I didn't think QoS was up to the same standards...but it was good. I really want Daniel Craig to keep on going and for Bond to stay simple and cool. Forget gadgets, forget all the bullshit.

Yeah, Goldeneye is the probably the best Bond within it's formula. Royale kinda changes that and it came out fantastic..and very believable. QoS was a bit too much of the cliched Bond formula but it was ok, just not a Bond film I wanted.

Pierce Brosnan was the worst Bond. Seriously.

I worry if this is true. Fox will fuck this shit up hardcore.

From the OP, it looks like this is on the distribution and marketing side.

Brosnan was clearly cut from the same cloth as Moore. His movies and Moore's movies focused most heavily on humor and gadgets. I still think his movies fared better than Moore's, if only because Brosnan never looked like a geriatric in any of his films.

As for Lazenby, I think he gave a thoroughly underrated performance and On Her Majesty's Secret Service may very well be my second favorite Bond film after From Russia With Love.

LICENCE TO KILL (1989), with Timothy Dalton - the only decent Bond movie made since ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (1969).

Balderdash... LTK has the WORST acting in the history of the Bond franchise (from everyone EXCEPT Dalton) and a tired storyline. I prefer The Living Daylights, a more straightforward yet thrilling Bond adventure (easily in my top 5).

The Brosnan Bonds are interesting. I like them all for different reasons. GOLDENEYE is a really good Bond in the "classic" mold, daftly mixing Connery's grit with Moore's cheeky fun. TOMORROW NEVER DIES is sort of a big 90s action film mixed with generic-to-silly Bond elements, but it works for what it is. I actually like THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH a lot, despite its flaws (Ms. Richards and lack of a thrilling finale). DIE ANOTHER DAY is 1/2 of a great Bond film, 1/2 of a totally ridiculous one.

Re: 20th Century Fox buys the James Bond franchise???

Die Another Day was the greatest Bond film ever until Bond left Cuba and left the good screenwriting there. When he's back in England, it turned into an okay Bond movie. Once he got to Iceland (or wherever the hell the climax took place), it turned into a shitty Bond movie. Although the dueling cars sequence was entertaining.

Always happy to have a new Bond movie and will take it on it's own merits.

Re: 20th Century Fox buys the James Bond franchise???

I also like Goldeneye over Casino Royale. Not a fan of the introspective/moody trend these days, take that Lifetime channel twaddle elsewhere. The Connery Bonds didn't have to resort to that melodramatic nonsense to be great, they simply had unique and creative plots and villains. Bond came from pulp tales not reader's digest. Also i thought Brosnan was a good Bond and Die Another Day was entertaining. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is a great one agreed totally, the deeper theme yet also retain that pulpyness.
