They should sentence him to a life of community service by making films for families, starting with the Hannah Montana sequel.

The thing is that human beings are complex and conflicting. The great thing about the appreciation of art it that it can and often does transcend the art itself to include the actions and beliefs of the creators. If I knew that Mozart had raped a woman once, let alone regularly, it would forever sour his music for me, and I would be unable to appreciate his music ever again. Every time I heard it, I would think "I can't believe that asshole raped a woman." This, in effect, would ruin the "sublime beauty," wouldn't you say?

Some of us aren't such pure art fans that we can excuse the terrible actions of the artist and appreciate the art.

And for the people that are playing the game of "what about this artist," and "what about that crime," don't bother. Go have fun in the politics forum, instead. If the person is obviously associated with a movie or CD or whatever, and has done something that I consider really horrible and unforgettable, I won't be able to appreciate that movie or CD or whatever. It really is that simple. Stop looking for a line in the sand. It's a useless exercise to post examples of other people who have done something "worse."

While the appreciation of art is subjective, there are certainly elements to any work of art that can be taken into account objectively. For example, the way Bach structures his compositions, or the way a cinematographer frames and lights a scene. So, whatever your personal feelings on Polanski might be, his art is often of such a high caliber that it cannot be denied simply because he did something criminal.

I love how this has gone from an arrogant "Rapist" caught, to the merits of his artistic endeavors.

If he was Ron the Plumber from Hoboken who drugged and banged a 13yo you guys would be calling for his head. No one would give a fuck about his plumbing abilities.

There is a shocking amount of sympathy for this guy just because he made some movies.

Uwe boll and Tyler Perry better not ever in the history of ever drug and rape any 13yo.....

For the record, I couldn't care less if a filmmaker or actor committed a crime as long as they did their time. Either way I'd still watch their films assuming they made stuff I liked.

I'm not saying he should necessarily walk free, just that regardless of his actions, his artistic endeavors are very much worth seeing.

Though it should be noted that there is a difference between being drugged and taking drugs. The girl, and correct me if I'm wrong, willingly ingested alcohol and drugs that evening, both which she had done before. It's not like Polanski secretly slipped a Quaalude into a glass of water or something. Certainly he raped her, and I'm not trying to suggest that she was somehow at fault because of her alcohol and drug consumption, but I think the 'drugging' aspect has been exaggerated.

Sure. Sounds like a "typical" Frathouse rape.

I guess I'm not familiar enough with the case. However, other than delineating the difference between charges that can be brought, this is almost a semantic argument. I'd argue that the fact that the victim took the drugs herself seemed like a virtual green light to Polanski, and had she not been all whacked-out he might not have attempted the crime.

Re: Roman Polanski arrested

I just watched Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired on my Netflix streaming queue as well. I have to say that anyone who's interested in this case needs to watch this documentary, as it will pretty much illustrate how poorly everything was handled by the judge.
I have to say that if this case were to continue and what happened before was taken into consideration, just about everything would fall apart for the prosecution. Couple this with the fact that the individual upon whom the crime was committed has forgiven Polanski then it would just be a big waste of money for everyone involved. It seems apparent that the judge was going to have him deported. I say just go with that and keep him overseas.

In all honesty, I think that at this point in time only God and Polanski can work this thing out when he finally dies.

Drugged or not, a 13-year-old girl cannot give the "green light," virtual or otherwise. In fact, Polanski doing nothing while she took drugs and drank alcohol is, in itself, a crime.

Re: Roman Polanski arrested

The man was a predator and the girl was his prey. He coaxed her into a "photoshoot" by claiming he was going to put her in French Vogue, got her alone & proceeded to take nude photos of her. He even chose the clothes she was to wear until he had her undress. A 13 year old girl. That was the FIRST incident.

Weeks later, he went back to get her to take more photos, again choosing the clothes she was to wear for her "photoshoot." He took her to Jack Nicholson's house and gave her champagne to drink & pose with in photos, then requested for her to take her clothes off again. Once he had gotten her inebriated, he pulled out the pills and made a big stink of whether or not he should take them because it might have impaired his ability to drive her home, yet he eventually shared it with her.

He had the girl strip completely nude and get into a jacuzzi, continuing to take photos and eventually getting in with her. The girl told him she had asthma as an excuse to get out, but he tried to coax her into staying. When she asked to be taken home, he told her he'd take her later and to go lie down in the other room.

He quizzed her on whether or not she was "on the pill." He performed oral sex on her, vaginal sex, and anal sex. A 13 year old girl.

Anyone who defends him, or says "it was 30 years ago, let it go," or "the victim forgives him so respect her wishes," or any of the dumb things I've been hearing since this broke yesterday isn't using their brain. He raped a child, supplied her with drugs and alcohol, took pornographic photos of her, and then fled the country after his celebrity afforded him a rather sweet plea deal that the judge may not have wanted to honor.

Who gives a shit how long ago it was? Who cares that the victim supposedly "forgives" him? To let him slide is an affront to the justice system and all of those self-serving twats in the Hollywood community who are decrying his "treatment" are nothing short of ridiculous. I'm looking at you, Debra Winger. And Whoopi Goldberg, who today sat on national television and lectured us that "it was NOT rape."

You're reading it entirely backwards. I'm saying that to Polanski, having this drugged up 13-year-old in front of him "seemed like a virtual green light" not that she "gave him the green light".

My point is that Polanski saw the opportunity of an incapacitated girl, (an opportunity that he more or less engineered, apparently) not that by drugging herself she was saying "go ahead Roman, I'm yours!"

Just to make myself clear, I am against raping a drugged-up 13-year-old.

Re: Roman Polanski arrested

I do agree that he deserves no leniency simply because it happened 30 years ago and the girl forgave him. Unless they plan to change the age of consent to 13 years old or younger, it’s still statutory rape. And even if they did, boozing up someone and getting them high so you can nail them is still date rape.

I honestly didn’t even know The Pianist (a movie I love very much) was one of his movie nor do I recall if I ever saw Chinatown. I honestly don’t care. He could have made my top ten favorite movies of all time and I’d still say he must serve his time.

If it weren’t for the judge botching this case, this wouldn’t even be an issue. However, that still doesn’t change the fact that he’s been free to live his life and have a great career when a portion of that life should have been spent behind bars. He still hasn’t paid for the crime. Just lock him up for the ten or so years he should have served in the first place and add to the sentence the five or so years you get for fleeing incarceration.

In any of those cases you mentioned (Elvis, Lewis, hot MILF teacher) did they drug and forcibly sodomize their underage victims against their will, despite being begged not to? Just curious.

A minor can't give consent. It's rape no matter what. That makes Elvis just as guilty. And again, we're talking about Elvis... you don't think there were drugs involved?

Waiting to hear some vows from people who will never listen to one of his songs again...

The girl said she found a Quaalude when she was ten and swallowed a part of it. It's not like she was a user. Also Polanski offered the alcohol to her. She didn't ask for it. After she had consumed a quantity of alcohol, Polanski offered her a Quaalude and she took it. That sounds like drugging to me.
