But on the other hand, the aggressor is an brilliant European auteur and the incident occurred in the swinging, liberal, anything goes 70s. What to do??

 Fun times, it's like watching my liberal friends justify Obama contiuing policies they hated under Bush.

My opinion on this case has nothing to do with being a liberal or not. That's just the usual BS from Americans who want to turn every issue into a liberal vs conservative argument. So let me recap my position:

1. Polanski commited a crime. He should have paid for it at the time.
2. The system fucked up, the judge was a goofball, he fled.
3. During 30+ years he didn't get in trouble with the law, the victim has forgiven him and doesn't want to have anything to do with this case anymore, and the justice system/law enforcement showed no particular inclination to catch him.
4. And now he's arrested... Even given the unlikely scenario that the extradition process is successful, and considering everything that has transpired previously, he would most likely not spend a single day in jail.

Hence, gigantic waste of resources, time, and money.

With prejudice means the prosecution cannot refile those exact charges.

Without prejudice means the opposite.

For those interesting in reading it, here is a PDF of the motion filed by the defense to dismiss the case.

(It's over 200 pages long, so can take some time to read)

Why aren't people outraged at the justice system for fucking up? Or at law enforcement for doing practically nothing all this time? Again, I find all this outrage ridiculous and somewhat misplaced. And considering the most lilely outcome, it is a waste of time, money and resources.

Who says I knew anything about it 30 years ago? Or was even around 30 years ago? I'm sorry but a lot of us here haven't been following this case for the past 30 years. And I don't see anyone defending law enforcement or the justice system. Do you?

My anger and outrage is mainly directed at idiots (mainly celebrities) who are protesting his arrest and claiming that he was treated poorly as well as completely idiotic statements like "it wasn't rape rape" and the general support for him just because he is a celebrity.

His artwork is totally separate from his actions. It should and will be judged according to its own merits. If someone chooses to boycott his work based on their own judgment that is their choice. However, just because he is a celebrity doesn't mean everyone should rally to his "cause".

Why do you think they are idiots? Maybe they just know the details of the case and think Polanski did not get fair treatment by our justice system. At least that's what the main people directly involved with the case (the prosecution attorney, the original D.A., the defense attorney, the defendant, and the victim) all think.

(Which begs the question: why do people who want to throw him in prison not care at all what the people actually involved with the case think?)

I know! It's exactly the same thing! Why, just today I heard Al Gore on TV talking about how much he loves rape.

Well, I was talking more about the idiot celebrities but I’m sure you're right about Gore as well.

Geez, you sound like my brother in law. The guy could make a political issue out of everything from football to oatmeal. He probably talks about politics while he's banging his wife.

No, I was merely making the point that celebrities tend to spout off idiotic opinions about things that are beyond their little minds.

Here's the transcripts to Larry King's 2003 interview with Samantha Geimer and her attorney Lawrence Silver.

Although there's a lot of interesting info in it (as well as plenty of instances of Larry King's typical cluelessness, like saying the murder of Sharon Tate happened only a few months before the rape -ohbfrank-), but one thing the attorney says is that the statute of limitations has expired on all the other charges that were dropped. (Whether he's right or not, I don't know. I guess that maybe depends on when/if Polanski was charged with being a fugitive, which was not done immediately after he fled.):

SILVER: [Polanski] expressed remorse at hearing in which he pleaded guilty to the one count of unlawful sexual intercourse. And statute of limitations on anything else is long gone.

I'd like to see a list of celebrities that meet your criterion of supporting Polanski, Chavez and Castro. My guess is you'd have a pretty small list.

And I'd like to see a list of celebrities (that doesn't include Steve Gutenberg) willing to lick Shed Spread out of my butt hole.

I'm not saying they all share in the same silly opinions, just that they spout off about stupid things, like believing in man made global warming, Chavez, or Castro. I don't really care to make a list but I’m sure most of the celebrity douche bags defending ass rape are also believers in global warming. I'd also be willing to lay some money down that the Chavez lovers (Penn, Sarandon, Stone, Robbins, etc) are also firmly in the Polanski camp.

Why, it takes an internet loon to dislike child rape, Chavez, Castro, and fear mongering? :hscratch:

No, but hijacking threads with right-wing political rants is usually wmlopez' department.

I wasn't making a right wing political rant; I was merely noticing that the left seems to be defending him more than the right. Yes, I was being silly about it and I will cut the political shit.

It is interesting, though, that it seems to be a political issue now.

Politics should never have a place in this debate. It's fucking child rape. I thought both parties could come together and agree on a case like this.

I would have thought so too, but it doesn't seem to be the case. It's not a religious thing either, I'm an Atheist.
