You just dared, but alas we cannot such things here.

Maybe a PM if you really want to know.

Re: Solomon Kane

I figured as much. It's cool... I'll either import the UK BD or wait for it to surface here.

Finally saw this. A SOLID and enjoyable B-movie throughout. The spiritual heir to gritty 80s fantasy flicks like Conan, Beastmaster, Krull, Dragonslayer, etc. Enjoyed the heck out of it for what it was. 3.5 out of 5 for me.

If I wasn't convinced before... that just sold me. Exactly what I was hoping to hear.

Re: Solomon Kane

I just watched the Thai PAL DVD of Solomon Kane. This movie is fucking awesome! One of the best action films (along with Kick-ass) of the year! I'm upgrading to UK Blu!

Solomon Kane is like an old-school hard R-rated film. There are some seriously fucked-up deaths in this film! The filmmaking was sort of like a cross between Ridley Scott, Peter Jackson, and Guillermo Del Toro. And i'm going to be looking out for James Purefoy now - he's sort of a cross between Gerard Butler and David Wenham. He seriously kicks ass as an action-hero leading man!

Why isn't this playing in USA theaters yet? This movie is so awesome and it will do well in the theaters (if it's left as R-rated).

It's too bad that Marvel couldn't slap their production label on this film. If this was a Marvel film, it would have been one of the best Marvel comic book-to-film adaptations.

But it's not a Marvel property. They wouldn't slap their label on something they didn't completely own and control. At least, not right now, anyhow.

Otherwise, I agree with you about the movie being a fun, buttkicking old school flick. It's a low budget enterprise, but every penny they had is on screen. There's grit and immediacy here that most soulless big-budget Hollywood blockbusters just don't understand and never will.

Of course, Solomon Kane is a B-movie, make no mistake, but it's a good one.

Do you know how much this film was made for?

According to wiki, $40 million. So it wasn't cheap, just low by today's standards.

Re: Solomon Kane

You have a point about them making good use of resources then Hokey.

The thought of 'low budget' didn't cross my mind as I watched it.

Re: Solomon Kane

yeah, I didn't think low-budget at all. I was assuming that this cost around 30 million...

Who did the voice Malachi in the opening scene? That voice was great! That sounded like Frank Welker (Claw from Inspector Gadget, Soundwave/Megatron from Transformers).

Re: Solomon Kane

Finally saw this movie and loved every minute of it. It's a great throwback to action/horror pictures of old. The movie had just the right tone and I like that they spent almost an hour (though I only noticed when I checked the timecodes after viewing the movie) of Kane gradually becoming part of the puritan family. It's that sort of quietness that really made what was to follow quite exhilirating. All in all, a fun movie with a solid cast and fun action.

Oh and the sound design was killer. I loved how the voice of the Devil's Reaper came from all the speakers and really filled the room. The overall sound design reminded me of Drag Me To Hell.

They don't bill a voice for the evil's Reaper. They just bill the suit performer (Ian Whyte). AT least none that I noticed. But I'll check next time I watch it.

Re: Solomon Kane

Consider me among those who enjoyed this as well. I had low expectations, but they were surpassed. James Purefoy was excellent as the lead. I understand the budget for this was low, but some of the CGI was pretty terrible. That devil beast or whatever it was looked like clay-mation. Makes you respect the work District 9 was able to accomplish even more, since it was $10 million cheaper.

I'll probably pick up the U.S. release whenever it comes out.

Re: Solomon Kane

A fun enough B-movie as others have said but the character of Kane only bore a glancing resemblance to the Solomon Kane I remember from the old comics (never read the original stories tho), who was much more of an avenging loner without backstory. Guess that wouldn't have made as interesting a movie though, you need a story arc.

The first half was better than the last, I think I started to lose my interest around the point he

I'm just glad he was

far too weak to defend himself at that point. I was willing to suspend disbelief with all the supernatural stuff but I would have lost interest in the movie if he could even pick up a sword at the point.

Of course, I had no issues with the vaguely mentioned healing method later on.

How does someone who lives in the US go about seeing this one?

I'm wondering the same thing. Clearly, I'm too lazy to import the BD (is it region-free?), but I was hoping to catch this on the big screen first.

Re: Solomon Kane

You have to import the BD. However, it's a Region-B "locked" Blu-ray disc.

Lionsgate purchased the US distribution rights a while back but al they've done is sit on it.

Re: Solomon Kane

You know... this stands up to repeat viewings, which is rare for this kind of film. At least for me it is.

Lionsgate? I'll wait in that case. I'm sure they'll unceremoniously dump it onto BD this fall.
