I was suggesting that since the director is Spanish he may bypass someone who isn't a naitive Spaniard for someone that is regardless if they can produce a Spanish accent.

If they choose a non Spanish actor. Mortensen is the best they can do for sure. That man is always surprising...BUT my issue w/ this remake is the tone they'll have w/ it. The original didn't really feel legendary in contrast to how mythic and epic the story presented it to be. That's the main flaw to me of the original, storytelling wise. Just never felt mythic while it tried to feel as such.
W/ Reynolds as the lead...what kind of tone will be given?

Uh, I've seen many clips along with his role in that Argentinian flick coming up. We were talking about him in another thread.

True, but I was assuming that because he's a Spaniard he'd hire one for the role. Wishful thinking on my part.

Reynolds wasn't bad in Safe House and he wasn't all Van Wilder in it. I can give him the benefit of a doubt here if he plays it straight. Too many filmmakers want to shoe horn him into that smart ass type role. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

EXCLUSIVE: Summit Entertainment has found a director for its reboot of Highlander, the tale of a sword wielding Scottish immortal Connor MacLeod. Cedric Nicolas-Troyan will make his feature directorial debut after serving as visual effects supervisor and second unit director on Snow White And The Huntsman. Summit is moving ahead with script by Iron Man scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway that hews close to the 1986 Russell Mulcahy-directed original that starred Christopher Lambert as the immortal title character, who, after being mentored by Ramirez (Sean Connery), spends centuries dueling other sword-wielding rivals until it’s only him and the murderously brutal barbarian Kurgan (Clancy Brown). They battle to be the final immortal who’ll influence mankind’s future. For Kurgan, that means raining hell on the world if MacLeod can’t stop him. Neal H. Moritz is producing with original film and series producer Peter Davis. Justin Lin, who once planned to direct, has stayed involved as executive producer.
Because the characters and mythology created by Gregory Widen were squandered in subsequent features, Highlander has been somewhat under the radar. The property stayed alive because of a superb syndicated series that starred Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod, a clansman of Connor. This is important, because Nicolas-Troyan is as big a fan of this series as I am. Borrowing the signature catch phrase of the movie and series “There can be only one,” Nicolas-Troyan knew he was battling against more seasoned filmmakers. He made sure he was the best prepared and the one most steeped in its mythology. And he just learned that he is, in fact, the one.
“I have been working on my pitch for this since the summer, and when I got there I met the original producer and I just started geeking out and he loved it,” Nicolas-Troyan told me. “The first movie came out when I was a teenager in France and it was one of my favorite films of those years. I loved the series also, they shot a lot of it in France, on the Seine River. My first reaction, like everybody else, was, really, do we need a remake? Then I read the script, and I thought about how Russell Mulcahy was this super visual video director who brought the pulse of the 80s to the film so well. I started thinking about taking those great characters and matching them with a modern, visceral take, and then I was in love with the idea and I just went for it.”
He is a Comic-Con-caliber fan of Highlander, and like me, he still laments the decision by the series show runners to kill off MacLeod’s elegant love interest, Tessa, way early in the show’s run. While subsequent movies went in progressively wackier directions, the series added to the immortal’s mythology, exploring historical periods with flashback scenes set all over Europe over 400 years, and it delved into practical drawbacks like the misery of being unable to bear children and to fall in love, only to see that person age and die, while the immortal doesn’t age physically at all. Nicolas-Troyan will supervise a fast pass of the script before the film is cast for a 2014 production start. He wants to enrich the film with some of the series touchstones.

I'm glad their sticking to the Art Marcum and Matt Holloway script. Fans hated the changes but I personally loved them. So I look forward to seeing that version being brought to the silver screen.
Cedric Nicolas-Troyan is a bit of a wild card since it'll be his first movie. I can only hope for the best and maybe he'll pleasantly surprise me. But I like that he actively fought to land the job and seems to have genuine passion for the property.

Get a knockout martial arts choreographer with a gonzo Hong Kong vibe and a visually overindulgent director who loves being garish and go for broke. Make it totally nuts. The premise suggests it. That, or get someone who can give it a high fantasy vibe, and after Jackson's work on LOTR, that'd be hard to top.

He's no Clancy Brown but I don't care as long as we get a badass remake (that stars Thomas Jane).
Dave Bautista Is The Kurgan In Highlander Reboot

Now here’s a thing. Dave Bautista – Drax in Guardians Of The Galaxy and Mr. Hinx in Spectre – is filling a Kurgan-shaped hole in the fast-developing Highlander reboot. According to the reliable Latino Review, Bautista will be destroying more stuff in the role filled by Clancy Brown in the 1986 fantasy movie.
The Kurgan is, of course, the arch-nemesis of Connor MacLeod, a barbarian with an iffy temperament and a nasty habit of decapitating news reporters. Brown brought a touch of panto villain to the original film but plenty of menace, too, in his quest to slay the other remaining immortals.
This planned dusting off of the mind-bending mythology and katana-wielding cult classic has been bubbling under for some time as Summit Entertainment has tried to pin down directors and stars. The lead role of immortal Scotsman Connor MacLeod remains unfilled, with Ryan Reynolds signing up and then later exiting, but now director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan has his bad guy in place, a hero can’t be far behind. Hard to imagine Bautista, an actor in the middle of a moment, signing up for a project that’s doomed to drift through time like some kind of mysterious ronin movie.
Stresses the VFX man-turned-director: “We have to find that younger emerging guy, and surround him with a strong Kurgan, and an actor who shines as Ramirez the way Connery did in that film.” Expect more casting news soon on that basis, although there’s no further word on Tom Cruise’s potential involvement in the Sean Connery/Ramirez role, a rumour that surfaced last November.
So what of Bautista as The Kurgan? Share your thoughts in the usual space...

Ouch. Yeah, not right at all.
About the only guy I don't mind singing in Freddie's stead is Elton John (and even he doesn't sound quite right):
