Sometimes actors self-select the avoidance of becoming a big star. One person mentioned here was Patrick Swayze. I looked up his credits on IMDb, and there's a quote from him that he chose to stop doing starring roles in big projects when his career was still hot, one reason being that he's a recovering alcoholic. Not every person is made to handle that kind of pressure. It might also not be personally fulfilling to do projects for the sake of money and stardom. Billy Crudup used to get a lot of press coverage several years ago as "the next big thing," but his career didn't really go that way, mostly because of choices he made. It's one thing for actors to really want stardom or whatever passes for that; it's another thing if it's just their publicists or film producers who are the ones trying to push them in that direction.

Well, lets face it...she is chubby. And yes, she is a very cute chubby. But a token smile can only get a chubby so far. And she may have grown out of the chubby body that she had earlier, but still, there isn't a plethora of talent there.

So last night was a slow night at work, and I'm passing the time reading DVDTalk(the Best Buy thread in the Store Forum is great, btw). One of my supervisors walks up on me and barks "What the hell are you doing, better not be on that Myspace crap!" I said "No sir, just browsing a movie forum. Don't look at stuff at work that can get me in trouble." Just as I say that, I'm scrolling through the second page of this thread, and the shirtless pics of Jan Michael Vincent and Orlando Bloom pop up. I'm like "oh hell", but he just started laughing and said "Wait until I tell everyone you're looking at gay porn up here!" and walked off laughing.

What about Mark Hammill? He was the lead in what was (at the time) the biggest movie of all time. Except for the two sequels, he's done little of note except for voice over work. All the prize roles and the big career went to supporting actor Harrison Ford.

Michael Paré. Was supposed to be the breakout star of the early 80's but never could find the right movie. Instead he's gone on to a very successful b-movie career. He certainly had screen presence (imo) to be a star based on his performances in "Eddie and the Cruisers" and "Streets of Fire".

Maxwell Caulfield. Similar story as Paré. Starred in Grease 2, the movie that was supposed to turn him and his co-star Michelle Pfeiffer into superstars. Movie bombed and his career never took off.

I don't really agree with what I said back in February. However, he's not a box office draw. The Prestige and The Fountain were both good movies but not exactly blockbusters. With Australia coming out, it looks like Hugh Jackman may be back to becoming a household name.

Even with The Dark Knight, I think Heath Ledger qualifies if only because of his untimely death. He would be an A-list star had he stayed alive.

JMV did achieve the huge stardom the thread title refers to. While making the seriesAirwolf he was the highest paid star ever on television. Unlike most of the names mentioned, he didn't putter out on the way to the top, he made it to the top and fell off.

I think the same thing. When "he wants to" he can become an intense actor.

I thought some of the recent Oscar winners who went on to pick insanely lame and stupid roles (Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Jamie Foxx, etc.).

I think there are some TV stars that need to stay on TV; and some movie stars that may want to look into TV.

Ted Danson & Tom Selleck come to mind as actors who just need to stay on TV. 'Three Men & Baby" not withstanding, they've never really had any kind of big screen presence, but pretty good success on TV. Based on their early TV work, people pegged them as the next big thing in movies. Never happened. There's just something about them, I think, that doesn't translate to movies.

Alec Baldwin strikes me as someone who might want to stick with TV. He's got a good screen presence there. Yeah, he's had a few big starring roles in movies, but I think his best big screen work has been in supporting roles. I just don't think he's leading man material anymore.

This has nothing to do with anyting, really. Just something I was thinking about while going through this old thread.
