I also disagree about JLH.
She was probably never going to be more famous then during her run in the mid 90s, but she has continued working at a normal pace since she became famous. Not many female teen actors achieve the level of popularity she did and remain a popular name a decade or so later.

1. Emilio Estevez
2. Rob Lowe (although he's had a solid career and is now one of the stars of Brothers & Sisters)
3. Mare Winningham
4. Ralph Macchio (do you think he'll be remembered for anything other than Daniel-San?)
5. Patrick Swayze
6. Ally Sheedy
7. Cynthia Gibb (I thought Fame and Youngblood would make her a star)
8. Nia Peeples

That's right...wasn't he Stanley Stupid in The Stupids (1996) as well? Oh wait, that was Tom Arnold

Jan Michael Vincent.
I can't find the quotes, and I'm kind of surprised they aren't on wiki, but back in the 70s, quite a few Hollywood people felt that JMV would be the greatest thing ever to come out of Hollywood, and as we all know, he has been anything but.
Then:

Most recent I could find, 1996...lots of drugs/drinking and a couple of car accidents later:

Def Claire Forlani, she was suppose to be the shit after her performance in Meet Joe Black, she hasn't done much sense.
Poor roles? I disagree. Post X-Men.... I not only think he is a very talented actor, AND he has been able to shed the type casting of Wolverine, while still doing a Wolverine movie. He also takes challenging and thought provoking roles that test his acting ability. Yes Van Helsing IMO was garbage, and Swordfish was ok (never saw Kate & Leopold) but he did The Prestige and The Fountain, which I thought were both superb movies, with some great performances by him. I will even say that his performance in The Fountain was Oscar worthy. I say he is a pretty big star.
Hugh Jackman
He should've been huge after Wolverine but has chosen poor roles.

Christian Slater
Had some supporting roles in big films, was a lead in a few big films of varying success, but otherwise never became the A-list actor he was expected to be and now has Uwe Boll and Hollow Man 2 to his credits.
I also think the air has been let out of Sarah Michelle Gellar's career. While she'll continue to work steadily, titles like Southland Tales, Scooby-Doo 2, The Grudge 2 (even though it's just a bit part), the straight-to-video Suburban Girl, the should've-been-straight-to-video The Return are not helping things any.

When Eric Roberts came out in "King of the Gypsies", he had amazing buzz and expectations. Nobody would have thought he was going to be eventually eclipsed by his sister.
BTW, I'd love "Gypsies" on DVD.

As for child stars, how about Kelly Reno and Corey Haim? Both showed a lot of promise as actors, then disappeared. Haim descended into drug use and debauchery, while, according to IMDb, Reno was involved in a car accident that derailed his career.

Was C. Thomas Howell ever supposed to be the next big thing?
And definitely agree with Alicia Silverstone. Clueless was supposed to elevate her to a whole new level, but it's where she peaked.
