Where is Machete?

Re: Where is Machete?
It might have something to do with the fact that Grindhouse was not a success in America. Then again, the way the Weinsteins have run their company, I'd almost expect them to greenlight four more Grindhouse projects based on how the first one did.

No, I think releasing a 3+ hour movie on Easter Weekend against the Passion of the Christ probably had something to do with it. Also, the marketing sucked. I knew about the movie and from the trailers I couldn't tell it was two separate films. If I hadn't known already, I would have been incredibly confused about what they were showing me.

Deathproof was a bit hard for a lot of people to enjoy.
After watching it on opening night, I expected it to be huge. Everyone had fun and I thought it'd be a very popular party-kinda movie.
Oh, and it opened against "Blade of Glory", "Meet the Robinsons" and "Are We Done Yet?". We also had Wild Hogs, Shooter and the TMNT animated flick in the top ten. Not exactly a lot of competition. If anything, I would blame 300, for eating up the previous weeks' 'Grindhouse' goers. You know, like people got their fill of bloody, fun, macho escapism for a month or two. 300 was up to $193mil as of that weekend.

I don't think so. I just think the movie appealed to a very small market of viewers. I think that the majority of people that saw it, liked it. While a lot of people stayed away because the idea of the movie didn't really do it for them. I think it's as simple as that.

Last I heard Trejo said it was still on, it was just a matter of scheduling and other stuff.

But, I think the main reason was touched upon already, which is that this type of cinematic experience/experiment really only appealed to people like QT and RR themselves, real cinema fans. J6P would not get it and probably walk out bitching about the missing reels and such. The fact that I saw this at a mall theater was weird and it was also pretty empty. Grindhouse should have been relegated to art theaters because film fans that go to those were the only ones who would've gotten it.
Of course it is ironic, that a film made 30 years after true Grindhouse fare, trying to be Grindhouse, is now an art film.

I may be wrong, but I believe in a lot of markets (the Christian South) they re-release Passion theatrically Easter weekend as a quick money maker, so the Christian groups can buy block tickets and use the film as some sort of sub-in for an actual mass.

The re-release of Passion of the Christ was in 2005, it failed to do much business in theaters on its second go around.
Grindhouse was advertised fine in theaters (the trailer) -- the actual TV ads didn't do such a hot job and actually were confusing, especially if you didn't know what a Grindhouse picture was. They kind of tried to jam the contents of both movies into one short promo that aired in 15- and 30-second commercial spots. By the end of the ad, you had some okay visuals but didn't really have a feel for what the movies were about, plus the whole 70s throwback thing is a tough sale to begin with.
I enjoyed the hell out of the movie and wound up seeing it twice in theaters. Found Death Proof to overall be the more satisfying entry (felt like applauding the end, it hit all the right notes) though Planet Terror was fun and far more accessible.
I'd see Machete in a heartbeat, but it does seem unlikely to ever come out. Would make a great double feature with Black Dynamite.

What the hell trailers/promotions were you watching?
The first thing it says on that trailer is...Grindhouse: a theater playing back-to-back films.
It also includes line such as "Rodriguez and Tarantino are back-to-back with a double feature" and "First is Rodriguez's Planet Terror, plus Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof," as well as "Two Motion Features for the Price of One."

Some moviegoers who bought tickets to see the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino "double bill" Grindhouse were apparently unaware that the feature comprised two separate movies -- and walked out after the first one, Rodriguez's Planet Terror, ended, published reports said today (Tuesday). "I don't think people understood what we were doing," Weinstein told today's New York Post. "The audience didn't get the idea that it is two movies for the price of one."
And from another IMDB article that mentions Grindhouse being split in two:
"I don't think people understood what we were doing. The audience didn't get the idea that it is two movies for the price of one. I don't understand the math, but I want to accommodate the audience."

I know for a fact that Rodriguez is trying hard to get this off the ground. I hope it happens because if the final product is anything like the trailer it will be epic.

But Christian groups were the main demographic that Grindhouse appealed to. Damn you, Easter!

Re: Where is Machete?
It probably wont happen. The only people still pimping it are the actors and filmmakers who are not the money men.
The entire Grindhouse concept was supposed to launch a series of Weinstein Co. produced movies, a direct to dvd line and so forth. But, the film seriously underperformed, the Weinsteins aren't in the best financial shape, and the film makers, for the most part, have moved on to other, more sensible, priority projects.

Re: Where is Machete?
People were walking out of the theater during Death Proof once the second group of chicks started blabbing on and on. I guess they had enough of the first group. By the end my brother and I were the only ones left. Not that it was full to begin with. I loved Planet Terror but Death Proof is still the worst Non-Matrix movie I have ever seen. I would love to see a Machete film however but as most have already posted it isn't likely due to the poor box office in the US. Did the dvds sell well because you can find them for like $7 each at Wal-Mart?

As much as I like the idea of a Machete movie, I'm worried that the idea of a Machete movie is a lot better than an actual Machete movie.

I think the biggest problem was the reported budget of $53 million. If they had stuck to the low budget roots of these films they would've been more profitable. Not that they could have been made for $200,000 or whatever those films used to cost, but there are ways they could've trimmed costs.

The titties shown in the trailer are worth the price for admission.
