Re: Box Office 4/3/09 - 4/5/09 - Fast & Furious box office leaves no room for Adventu
Last year, in early December, I saw a trailer featuring a car-and-truck chase with the main car driven by a lead actor who was bald. I got my hopes up thinking the actor would be Jason Statham and the film would be TRANSPORTER 3. As the camera moved around to show the actor's face, my hopes were dashed when I recognized him as Vin Diesel. It was a trailer for this new F&F film. Bummer.
I have yet to see any of the Fast & Furious films. I taped the third one off cable, because it's set in Japan and features a Japanese actress I like in it, but I have yet to watch it.
I find the lead actors in this series completely devoid of charisma. Even a cheesy action franchise needs someone in it whom we want to see on screen. The Transporter films have Jason Statham. TAKEN is a grade-B thriller elevated by Liam Neeson's sharp performance. PUNISHER WAR ZONE had Ray Stevenson, Dominic West and that other madman, the one who played Looney Bin Jim so brilliantly. The best Van Damme and Steven Seagal films had Van Damme and Seagal sort of in their prime (or at least preceding their decline). I'm sorry, but Vin Diesel doesn't rate and I wouldn't know Paul Walker if you showed me a picture of him. Can you say "generic"? Michelle Rodriguez looks interesting to me, but she has yet to appear in anything I want to see.

I'm not interested in the F&F series, but if this opens the door for a new Riddick movie, I am pleased as punch!

WTF? 72 Million?
Have I lost touch with reality? I didn't even realize there was much of a demand for this movie.

The drop will be huge as it's a front loaded picture; but this opening weekend has just guaranteed a sequel. NOBODY was expecting it to pull in close to $75 million.
It's opening day made more than the last entry's opening weekend. It's opening weekend made more than the last entry's entire domestic total.
Yeah. We will see a fifth one.

I also heard it was pretty terrible, but at this point the movie has already exceeded expectations for final gross

Sigh. How did people ever watch movies before the internet telling them what was good and bad.

I don't need someone to shove a turd in my face to know it stanks.

I've yet to hear anything bad about F&F. Good for it's haul. Hopefully this will get the same cast back for another one.

Nice haul first weekend out. Loved it, got my moneys worth and more - bring on #5!!!
with worldwide figures taking the gross so far to $102 million against a production budget of $85 million, Universal must be very happy indeed.

Saw it on Saturday and it was worth every penny.
I laughed. I cried. I wowed. Thank you for the new model with original parts

Then it was earlier than December. I saw the trailer for F&F4 when I saw QUANTUM OF SOLACE, which--I just checked my notes--was on Nov. 20, 2008. So I was off by only a week or two.
Nitpickers.

Just because this movie is a blockbuster hit does not mean that the public is going to run out and see whatever the actors are in next.
Remember Robert Hays after AIRPLANE came out?
Or Jeff Goldblum after ID4.
