Year One (Ramis, 2009) - Jack Black & Michael Cera in Biblical Times
I didn't see a thread for this (although I thought we had one). Opens in June. There was a teaser during the Super Bowl but the full trailer came out today.

It does look funny. When I first read the concept and saw the cast I thought it was going to be R, but this looks more PG-13 and it looks like it works.

Cuts made to Jack Black comedy after it initially gets an R

"Year One"
Sony's "Year One," the new Jack Black comedy from producer Judd Apatow and director Harold Ramis, has been rated PG-13 after the filmmakers made some cuts to the film.
The MPAA's Classification and Rating Appeals Board on Tuesday upheld the R rating originally given to the movie in which Black and Michael Cera play a couple of barely out-of-the-cave men who travel through the ancient world.
Apatow and Ramis appeared before the board to argue for a more lenient rating, but the appeals board still opted for the R, which requires moviegoers younger than 17 be accompanied by an adult, because of "some sexual content and language."
The filmmakers then made cuts to the film, and as a result, the ratings board has now given it a PG-13 "for crude and sexual content throughout, brief strong language and comic violence."
Sony will release the film domestically June 19.

I saw a full trailer the other day and - WOW - this looks horrendous. Not even remotely funny to me, and I usually like Black. Cera I've always felt was just ok. But every joke fell flat IMO.

Merging with the "Hollywood Hates Christianity" thread.
What I don't get is they are in year one. I presumed that's A.D. Yet they are meeting Cain and Able? Eating forbidden fruit? I am sure this movie isn't going for the historical accuracy of 10,000 B.C. but it had me a little confused.
I liked the director and screenwriter involved, so I will give it a chance. Still, something feels like it's just another director trying to make his Judd Apatow movie. We'll see...

I like the full trailer and think it looks hilarious...hopefully the cuts won't hurt it too much but I guess we'll still get the R-rated version on disc eventually.

This thing sure is getting some shit reviews:

I never liked Jack Black and Michael Cera's schtick is getting old. I may catch this on HBO sometime down the line.
I also think this will bomb at the box office.

It's been a long time since so much mediocrity was crammed into one movie!

I've crapped turds that were more polished than this movie.
There are maybe five minutes of funny stuff, and that includes the outtakes that play during the credits.

It's a generic comedy, but has some good chuckles throughout. It's certainly not a crap movie, just not an especially good one. David Cross, Harold Ramis (as an actor), and Hank Azaria are all highlights.

Okay ... just sat through this piece of whatever.
First, the good news: it's just a little over an hour and a half and I wasn't totally bored.
(If I can think of anything else "good" I'll edit this post.)
Every now and then, it rose to the level of a medioce SNL skit. I smiled (not laughed, mind you, simply smiled) about four times, which is about once every 24 minutes. Three of those times were for the outtakes during the end credits, which means that I actually went through more than 24 minutes with nothing to amuse me.
If you have ever seen a Jack Black performance, you already know exactly what he will do for every line, reaction, physical shtick and (if you dare use the word for it) emotion. No surprises from Cera, either.
I guess if you are the sort that likes recycled (no pun intended) pee and poo jokes, and think any reference to a eunuch is the pinnacle of high wit, you will be more entertained than most.
...and it's not that I don't enjoy a good raunchy comedy. In fact, I'll probably rewatch PORKY'S tonight to restore my faith in the genre.

Yeah I'm passing on this one. Standard Jack Black and Michael Cera fare that I can see for free by watching School of Rock and Arrested Development.

It's funny you mention that, because "Year One" would probably eat those turds.
