It's not directly stated that HE did, but that's the implication. They go to confront him, but he stonewalls them so I guess it's a mystery that will never be solved.

Here's something to think about: was it a random chance that Larry picked the Dude's car or was he and a friend casing him from Walter's Locksmith store?

maybe I am wrong but I always assummed the dude's car was really old and he obviously bought it used, therefore it was a homework assignment that was sitting in the crevis of the seat for a long time.........I always just thought that the dude never realised it was there the whole time he had the car........and that kids family was probably one of the former owners of the car.....
