The safest director in the world presenting... does that mean the film by the 2nd safest director in the world (Ron Howard) will win?

If that did happen, obviously The Wrestler wouldn't have been more than a blip on the radar.
I think it's a shame that it's possible Rourke's 'persona' might have swayed voters in any way, his performance was unbelievable and I think he earned it.

I wouldn't call him undeserving, just less deserving than Rourke. I know the Academy are suckers for a biopic, and I did think Penn was great, but he had a template of a real character to build off.
I think what Rourke created was more difficult and impressive. I could see someone else pulling off a very strong Harvey Milk performance (not as good), but I cannot fathom anyone but Rourke as Randy the Ram.

Nice.
Personally, I'd KILL to see a movie where Penn and Rourke in an epic Heat-like crime saga. THAT would rule.
Still, it's probably Rourke's dramatic return to the mainstream that will solidify his placement there. He's not getting trapped in DTV hell any time soon.
P.S.: I thought the Academy would grow a pair of balls after last year's ceremony where every winner deserved it. They just set everything back to the early 90's. Jesus.

Cue more Slumdog hate?
Still thought it was a very good movie, not epic, but deserving over the other nominees. I still think The Dark Knight and The Wrestler were robbed.
