Wow, nice opening day for F13.

I'm shocked that "Shopaholic" didn't make more, what with all those colorful outfits.

I would have thought Shopaholic would open big, given V-day and all. Usually women flock to those things.

It's simple. Last week guys made compromises to see He's Just Not That Into You with their wives and girlfriends. This week guys pick the movie.

Besides, Friday the 13th is a better date movie than both HJNTIY and Shopaholic.

When I saw it today, there was a ton of families in the theater. Mom, Dad, Kids, hell a few grandparents all together to get their Jason on. I was shocked by that myself.

Happy to see a R rated slasher bringing in the $$$

Man, Friday almost made more than the next five films on the list combined.

While listening to a Krzysztof Penderecki piece of music, which contained a chorus with "striking pronunciations", Manfredini was inspired to recreate a similar sound. He came up with the sound "ki ki ki, ma ma ma" from the final reel when Mrs. Voorhees arrives and is reciting "Kill her, mommy!" The "ki" comes from "kill", and the "ma" from "mommy". To achieve the unique sound he wanted for the film, Manfredini spoke the two words "harshly, distinctly and rhythmically into a microphone" and ran them into an echo reverberation machine. Manfredini finished the original score after a couple of weeks, and then recorded the score in a friend's basement. Victor Miller and assistant editor Jay Keuper have commented on how memorable the music is, with Keuper describing it as "iconographic". Manfredini says, "Everybody thinks it's cha, cha, cha. I'm like, 'Cha, cha, cha? What are you talking about?"

I have begun to hear the ki ki ki, but I always hear ah ah ah, not ma ma ma.

I always thought it was "Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch..ki-ki-ki-ki-ki".. someone told me they thought that's what it was, meaning "chop and kill".

But it's not so much a date movie, it's the kind of flick they go to with other women.

I knew Friday the 13th would drop, but it took a sharper dip on Saturday and Sunday than what I would have guessed. But it's no surprise as horror films are front-loaded. With a $19 million production budget, it's already a big hit and will do well on dvd/blu-ray.

$42 million is pretty damned good for a February horror film. As droidguy predicted, Friday the 13th (2009) is now the second highest grossing Friday film, after Freddy vs. Jason.

If the movie rakes in $345m worldwide it'll be more profitable than all the previous entries were in America put together. Yesterday people were saying it might make $60m this weekend, now it seems less likely that it's going to work out that way.

I always heard $50m for the 4 day, which is likely.

Awesome holds for Taken, Gran Torino and Slumdog Millionaire

I have read plenty of reviews slamming it, because of its release in the current economy. You got to believe the timing for releasing it right now is pretty shitty. Glad to see Friday the 13th make that much. Isn't that higher than Freddy vs. Jason did opening weekend.

Freddy vs Jason opened on August 15, 2003.

$36.4 million at 3,014 theaters. It finished with $82 million.

Friday the 13th scared up the largest debut on record for a horror film, taking in $42.4 million this weekend, according to studio estimates from box office tracking firm Media By Numbers.

The debut was $17 million more than many analysts projected and trounced the record held by 2004's The Grudge, the previous highest-opening horror film with $39 million.

The 12th film to spring from the 1980 original is good news for studios rushing to reboot classic horror titles. Remakes of A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Wolf Man and The Last House on the Left are headed to the big screen.

The romantic comedy He's Just Not That Into You was second with $19.6 million, bringing its 10-day total to $55.1 million.

The thriller Taken also held well, taking third place with $19.3 million. The Liam Neeson picture has done $77.9 million in three weeks.

The Isla Fisher comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic met most expectations with $15.4 million, good for fourth place, while the animated Coraline took $15.3 million and fifth place.

The only other major newcomer, Clive Owen's political thriller The International, was seventh with $10 million, meeting most projections.

Ticket sales surged 28% over last weekend and 43% over the same weekend last year.

Final figures are due Tuesday because of the Presidents Day weekend.

Taken has to be the sleeper hit of the last few years. I can't recall any film with lower drops than this one in recent memory...especially since many predicted that its opening weekend would be about ~14 million. On a second viewing of it I appreciated it much more than my first viewing.

Taken will probably become a film series, where Nesson is the "go to guy" for people with a large bank account and unique problems.

Gran Torino and Taken have been performing far better than expected. Taken surprised me because it had been so heavily pirated months before its release, but that may have actually helped it due to word of mouth.

Here's something to think about...

Think of all the tickets that were sold to kids under 18 to other films, who then sneaked into F13. F13 would have easily made another $20 million if these sales counted. I think "Confessions of a Shopaholic" owes F13 a big thank you for them having numbers at all.

Not only is Taken one of the biggest sleeper hits in a while, it's the best thing 20th Century Fox has had their hands in since Borat.

I'd take a sequel.
