You're thinking of David Denby.

I guarantee Inception will not be a massive box-office hit -
it is WAY too heady for the average viewer.

It succeeds at what it does, and works on some of the layers, but it is not perfect whatsoever - there are flaws in the story pretty easy to see, but it doesn't get in the way of enjoying a masterful multi-layered action/drama.

Re: Inception (Nolan, 2010): Contemporary Sci-fi/Action

Saw this last night.
It's so dense with complicated, heady ideas; it's like the anti-Michael Bay blockbuster.

Negatives:
--The movie has almost no humor. The few light moments elicited guffaws from the audience as if they were desperate for an opportunity to laugh. Ellen Page has one great dead-pan joke and the movie definitely could have stood more of that.
--No emotional connection at all with any of the characters. Seriously, when the story reached its emotional climax for Leonardo's character, I couldn't have cared less.

Positives:
--LOTS of incredibly staged action sequences. Shoot-outs, fight, and chases galore!
--Fantastic, dynamic visuals. The movie is a great technical achievement.
--Great use of sound. [The theater had speaker problems, so when the sound system was working properly, it really became apparent how effective the sound design was.]
--It sure ain't dumb-downed for the masses.

That's kind of how I see it.

Is there an end of credits scene in the movie?

Re: Inception (Nolan, 2010): Contemporary Sci-fi/Action

My thoughts
IMO Nolan does dumb it down. Every plot point is overexplained Ellen pages character is one of the worst written characters ive ever seen. The callbacks of "paradox!" and "im improvising" belong in the sorcerers apprentice not this

It is a kind of visionary masterpiece but also highly flawed. The four layers of dreams end up consisting of things blowing up and people randomly shooting at each other. The only time they achieved a Spielberg esque sequence of brilliant action / space was with the turning room action while the car was flipping. That was one of the most thrilling set pieces ever.
Most everything else was generic and poorly coordinated action. Also the third and fourth layers were lame. Instead of getting bigger / more digital they should have gone smaller like the third man sewer maze
Its hard to complain when it's one if the most ambitious movies I've seen. But still lots of complaints

For me Nolan continues to frustrate there's similar BS in all his movies but it is still an achievement and it is 4/5 for me

I don't know why people are throwing the word masterpiece around. Visually stunning, absolutely. Thrilling at times, yes. A masterpiece? No way. A masterpiece is unquivocally praiseworthy in all areas, which I don't feel Inception is.

You could say the same thing about The Dark Knight, but that sure didn't stop people from using that word.

Theater i saw it in was PACKED. Also it was the XD screen at the Cinemark, so it can prob hold 450-500 people easy. I can easily see this doin around 60 mil this weekend, and if the general public word of mouth is good, then it will prob hold and prob easily cross 200 mil

Whether or not you think The Dark Knight is one, Inception isn't as good as TDK, so the word shouldn't be used at any point to describe Inception.

Anyone who gives 'The Eclipse' a D+ is not worth reading as a critic, so I didn't bother.

Ciaran Hinds is a real talent, one of the better actors working today. His excellent, nuanced performance alone makes 'Eclipse' a good film. Add to that Aidan Quinn giving a stellar performance as the narcissistic, alcoholic writer, and the director's choices with the supernatural stuff? It's well worth watching and a fine film.

Anyone who gives that a D is a dolt.

I'm stoked about seeing 'Inception'.

Seeing this in a few hours...If its as good as I've heard so far, I can only imagine how epic Batman 3 is going to be. Nolan officially joins Scorsese and Tarantino as the only directors where I geek out when they have a new film coming out.

I love the twist at the end of the movie how everyone was involved in the Christina Hendricks gangbang dream sequence. It was sort of annoying how Tom Berenger was being greedy and not sharing and then...wait...that was my dream...

+1

I'm actually ponying up for the cost of an IMAX ticket for this one, and it's not often that I feel the need to pay to see a movie in theaters, let alone the higher price of an IMAX showing. I also read the online prequel comic as light preparation, since all indications are that the film can go over one's head on the first showing. I'm expecting my mind to be blown. Saw it, loved it. But like all of Nolan's films, I need a few more viewings to really digest it. Also, it didn't help that some of the dialogue got drowned out by the music quite a few times. Hey Hoffman, turn your center channel up...

Why the hell are Cirian Hinds and Aidan Quinn in a Twilight movie?!
