Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)

Caravaggio meets Fight Club

http://thefilmstage.com/wp-content/u...sem_singh1.jpg

The visually masterful filmmaker Tarsem recently told Empire about his new film, War of the Gods:

“It’s turning into, basically, Caravaggio meets Fight Club,” he said. “It’s a really hardcore action film done in Renaissance painting style. I want to see how that goes; it’s turned into something really cool. This guy who I really love, who’s the only one person in it right now, is the brother in The Tudors, Henry Cavill. I’m going for a very contemporary look on top of that so I’m kind of going with, you know, Renaissance time with electricity. So it’s a bit like Baz Luhrman doing Romeo + Juliet in Mexico; it’s just talking a particular Greek tale and half contemporising it and telling it.”
Here is the plot:

A purported bastard who retains an allegiance to his mother despite the fact that he longs to join the quest of a king who is battling demons in ancient Greece later embarks on a grail of discovery that has him finding he is the king’s son and also fated to become his country’s greatest hero as he leads the successful war against long-imprisoned Titans who are hoping to use the demons to restore their power.
It is scheduled to start shooting next month and be released in 2010.

The Fall was beautiful. Can't wait for this.

Well, this is my most anticipated film. I loved everything about The Fall, hope he does as good of job with this.

I wasn't the biggest fan of The Fall but it was a fucking beautiful film. This one sounds interesting.

I can't believe he spent 14 years scouting for locations in The Fall. It shows though.

After walking out of The Cell vowing to never see another film by this man, he won me over COMPLETELY with The Fall - my favorite film in years.

I'm not so sure what he was trying to describe in the first paragraph above, but the plot sounds pretty interesting - I'll be all over this one I think.

You had me a 'Tarsem' - the Fall hasn't yet received the recognition it deserves (outside of this thread, anyways) - maybe this new film will win over some dedicated fans. The Cell wasn't great, yet the imagery was unforgettable and powerfully detailed. I cannot wait to see what he does w/ Greek gods

The Fall gets mixed reviews but most agree it's absolutely stunning. Apparently his resurgence has inspired the studios to make a straight to video sequel to ... The Cell. Without him of course, but you know how these things work.

I was in awe of The Fall. It absolutely was my favorite of the year. However, I hated The Cell and would not want to watch any kind of sequel to it.

That being said, I really look forward to his next movie - he really earned a lot of goodwill from me after The Fall

Maybe "War of the Gods" will sweep the Oscars like "The Fall". Especially the Best Cinematography award.

Wait..............

Why wasn't The Fall nominated...didn't it meet all the requirements or is cuz it's popping in and out of the other festivals long before it came out in theaters?

Festivals mean squat. The moment a movie is released in the theater, it qualifies for any Oscars for that year. So I don't know why it didn't get a Cinematography nomination at the very least. Hence my snide post. Did the studio drop the ball and not push it more (!?) "Slumdog" my ass. "The Fall" is probably the most stunning looking movie I've seen in a decade. Maybe more.

Fuck, is he doing the screenplay too? Damnit. I'm sorry. Tarsem certainly has visual flair but watching his films feels like seeing a 5-hour perfume commercial. The man needs to let someone else produce and write his movies.

As a visualist, he's on par with Michael Bay. But because he makes people in funny costumes riding an elephant look beautiful (as opposed to a car blowing up behind Will Smith), he gets accolades from a different group.

(The above statement is more praise for Bay than a bash against Tarsem.)

While I give props to Tarsem for his creativity, I don't exactly disagree with you.

It's funny you mention that, since they were classmates in film school.

In any case, The Fall was one of my favorite movies of last year. I'm in.

This sounds to me like it'll be a very Gaiman-esque (or Percy Jackson for grownups):

As of yet, the production details are not being released. It is being touted by some to potentially be a modern mythological blockbuster film with special effects and in HD. Director Tarsem Singh tells that he is planning an action movie to be a visual masterpiece using renaissance painting styles. He then goes on to say that he is "...kind of going for a very contemporary look on top of that so I'm kind of going with, you know, Renaissance time with electricity... a bit like Baz Luhrmann doing Romeo + Juliet in Mexico; it's just taking a particular Greek tale and half [make it contemporary] and telling it."

Hmm. I'm not feeling it. I reminds me too much of 300 (and I thought that was a steaming pile of crap). I was expecting something far more beautiful looking from Tarsem. But the nod to House Of Flying Daggers was amusing.

Tarsem can do no wrong in my eyes. Even if the movie sucks, I get so lost in the visuals.

Yeah but the visuals in this one seem very ho-hum. I expected something far more pleasing to the eye than what I've seen in the posters and that clip. This looks very bland coming from him.

Considering that's recorded footage from a TV and the contrast is all over the place on that....it looks interesting and I'm pretty much game for it.

They'd better have this song on the soundtrack:

Looks ok. But the fact that he uses an off the shelf Hone Depot sledge to break the big rock takes me right out of it. I have an older looking sledge hammer in my garage.

It looked fine, but Tarsem's last two films were exceptionally visually arresting, with wonderful landscapes and costumes. This looks kinda neat, but not nearly as grand as The Fall or The Cell. I wonder did he find the 3D cramped his style.

a little disappointed... as i, too, was a huge fan of The Fall and The Cell visually. this looks like a 300 re-hash. i'd watch it just to see some awesome tidal wave action though... i'm a sucker for natural disaster, no matter how Roland Emmerich it may be.
