Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
This looks like a hybrid of 300 and The Cell to me. You can still see his art direction in many sequences, but the action sequences don't look particularly unique. And it seems kind of cheesy.

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I've never seen anything like that Sistine Chapel-esque battle. I'll have to see it in the theatre. It looks better than 300 in every regard.

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
the only thing I am not of fan of in that trailer is that helmet Rourke has and the color tone for film (minor gripe actually...just...reminds me of 300 too much obviously)

on that note...I really wish they'd not put in that political crap in Sparta...that was boring as shit. |
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
300 worked best as a trailer. It was a total bore as a full length feature. The political BS (which went nowhere) made it even worse.

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I was hoping the new trailer would change my mind but that looks so unbelievably stupid. I know it must've been expensive as hell but it somehow has a cheap DTV feel to it.

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I saw the trailer for IMMORTALS (in front of BRIDESMAIDS!). There was so much CGI, I thought, why bother with actors, why not just make an animated feature? Plus, the imagery was so friggin' dark. Did they not have color in Ancient Greece? No red, no blue, no yellow...just brown and gray???
Freida Pinto's hot, though. |
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
Yes. Yes she is.
|
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I saw this trailer in front of The Tree of Life and it didn't do much for me. The heavy use of CGI and comparisons to 300 were real turn offs. However, I'll still check it out based on the strength on how visually interesting Tarsem's films usually are.

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
Looks corny as hell.

I keep watching trailers for this hoping one will finally make it look good. Each instead makes it look worse. :( |
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I'm still game for this movie. After The Fall, I'm totally game for Tarsem's take on this stuff.

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
That's meh written all over it.

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I think it looks better than Conan.
|
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I expect typical Tarsem - loads of style, hollow as a drum.

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I thought 300 was very mediocre and the fact they are selling this as "from the producers of 300" is a huge turnoff to me. It seems like the retarded brother of an also retarded 300.
Tarsem is all about style but the style that I see in this seems uninspired and pretty done. The action looks like typical '300' slow mo crap which, I guess, should leave the viewer slowly rubbing one out all the while muttering "coooooooool". Looks lame, quite lame. Oh, and I'm freakin' tired of Tarsem's obsession with retarded masks! ARGHH!! |
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
"The Fall" was amazing so I'll at least give it a shot.

This somehow has managed to make over-the-top synonymous with bland. |
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
What a blatant attempt to capitalize off the success of 300. There doesn't seem to be any creativity/originality here.
|
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I enjoyed the trailer, I hope this movie turns out to be fun. I also enjoyed The Cell.
|
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
Tarsem is a visualist. His images work better as perfume commercials, not films.
|
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I dunno...I loved The Fall. Never seen the lopez film though.
|
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
This thread started out praising and turned into condemnation, how amusing the armchair critics. As for me, the trailers looked good, I plan on adding this to my collection. -kd5-

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I'm personally avoiding the trailers - I want all the imagery just to unravel in front of me.. okay I've seen a few seconds, at this morning's screening of 'The Thing' - question though, imdb denotes the film as having an aspect ratio of 1.85 (now imdb is never 100% reliable) but what I saw looked more like 1.66, what's the story? the less wide it is, the more of a (AMC) ETX or (Cinemark) XD screen will be used to maximum effect - shame that this isn't getting the IMAX treatment.

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
Tarsem makes pretty films but he's never made a good one.

However, I personally loved The Fall. I thought it was stellar. And I actually really liked The Cell. It's one of those movies won't leave my head. Being that Tarsem does dynamic visuals, this movie looking like a 300 retread is disappointing. |
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
I thought for sure this was going to be Tarsem's first PG-13 movie, I was wrong. It being R has me much more interested.
|
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
It looks dark and dreary, just like every other predominantly CGI-fantasy film out there. Can someone give digital effects technicians lessons in primary colors?
|
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
Yeah...I loved the hell out of The Fall.
|
Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
well... visually the movie is amazing with an all out outlandish smack down finale that has to be seen in 3D - a truly "holy... mother... of... god" sequence - it looks very 'God of War'
- thought the beginning lagged - the minotaur looked way too Julie Taymor for my taste - Mickey Rourke is annoying, but I never cared for any of his characters anyway so that's a given in my case. - I want to enact bodily harm on the projectionist at AMC Tyson's, the '3D' ETX screening was terrible, the first 15 minutes had severe ghosting/double imaging. - I purposefully tried to not see any footage/trailers before seeing this, which I did quite well - but one shot that was featured briefly in the trailers was utterly jaw dropping in 3D was the Spoiler:

Re: Immortals (Tarsem, 2011)
Narratively a little weak, but many scenes are so gorgeous to stare at in this film. Saw it in 3D.
The story felt overly long in the first hour for its general plotline, and doesn't give enough information to develop the players in the story: humans (Theseus the good guy, Hyperion the conquering type, and other supporting folks), the gods (Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, and others), and Titans (just a bunch of dudes standing in a mythical prison cube for a long time). So carefully constructed sequences show up on the screen, but without proper character build-up for the players in the story, the action, while skillfully executed, fails to engage the viewer, and becomes a fine reel of artful EFX and composition. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful film in many of the scenes, and it takes the viewer away to a place a long time ago where humans and gods engaged one another to fight the release of titans, who have the potential to bring the heavens down to earth and make it a very unpleasant place to be. I just wished it had a better script to engage the viewers with a more vested interest in the central conflict. I wanted more content of the gods and titans. The script relies too much on narration to fill in the gaps, to its detriment. I give it 2.75 stars, or a grade of B-. |

Just kidding. Would you say it's on par with 300? Or does it play like a lesser knock-off? |
