Tim Burton to direct full-length "Frankenweenie"

From The Hollywood Reporter:
(John) August has booked a pair of gigs that will see him working with top-flight directors: He's set to write "Frankenweenie" for Tim Burton and Disney after first tackling the comic book adaptation "Preacher" for Sam Mendes and Columbia.

"Frankenweenie" is based on a comedic horror short that Burton made in 1984 while a film school student. The story tells of a man who brings his dog back to life after it is killed by a car.

While the original "Frankenweenie" was a live-action project, the new one will be made using stop-motion animation and be in 3-D. Like the original, the feature version is to be shot in black & white. Burton is producing, and many of the animation artists and crew from the director's "Corpse Bride" will be involved, with the studio aiming for a 2011 release.
Keywords "3-D", "stop-motion", and "black & white" are all big pluses for me.

It was a child. Maybe this means it won't be a kids movie.

Wow! Never saw this coming. I loved the short film. And it may not be a kid's movie. Maybe PG-13? Although would love for it to be for adults, and Rated R. Like "Ed Wood".

The original was a great special feature on The Nightmare Before Christmas BD. Been looking forward to this for quite some time.

Re: Tim Burton to direct full-length "Frankenweenie"

I first saw it on the laserdisc back in the day. I love Tim's work, but I'm not real excited about this. The short film format is perfect for this story. I really don't want to see it stretched out and it being a man instead of a boy takes a lot of the charm out of it.

Sorry.... for me.

Same here. I cant muster up any enthusiasm at all for this. I'd rather see Dark Shadows or even a sequel to Planet of the Apes before this.

sounds good.

Burton's stop-motion stuff is pretty good though I was a little disappointed in The Corpse Bride.

Looks like he's Producing and Directing this one...

Sounds interesting. I think Burton is at his best when hes directing his own source material.

Re: Tim Burton to direct full-length "Frankenweenie"

It's funny when the person is a big name director but is then introduced as "From the director of Alice in Wonderland." What about this: "From the studio that fired the director when he was an animator on The Fox and the Hound."

Similar with Avatar using "From the director of Titanic." Yeah maybe J6P needs it but I'd think their names alone are good enough at this point.

someone needs to take the camera away from Tim Burton like you would take scissors away from a child.

It can't be worse than Alice in Wonderland, right? Right?

Re: Tim Burton to direct full-length "Frankenweenie"

I really like his stop-motion projects along with some of his older live-action stuff. I'm still not that excited about this but more due to the subject matter. I would've liked to have seen a stop-motion movie based on new material.

The actual short that he made in the 80's is pretty good. I'm wondering how he's going to expand it to feature length though.

It's Burton working with Winona Ryder again; that's all I need.

I'd see this if it were a live action movie with a real dog.

....fuck that. I can only imagine the crap look to it in live action. While I may not be asking for this film. I do like the look of it..dunno if it can survive a full length running time though...
