Review from a showing at SXSW, the reviewer tells you when you should stop reading if you haven't seen it. Can't wait to see this.

Re: The Cabin In The Woods (Dir. Goddard, 2010, Jenkins, Whitford)

Variety says:
Not since "Scream" has a horror movie subverted the expectations that accompany the genre to such wicked effect as "The Cabin in the Woods," a sly, self-conscious twist on one of slasher films' ugliest stepchildren: the coed campsite massacre. The less auds know going in, the more satisfying the payoff will be for this long-delayed, much-anticipated shocker, which was caught in limbo for more than two years during MGM's bankruptcy. Finally surfacing as the opening-night selection of SXSW after sneaking last December at the Austin-based Butt-Numb-A-Thon, this Lionsgate release should cause something of a sensation when it opens April 13.

Given the provenance of the project, which was co-written by Joss Whedon and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" collaborator Drew Goddard, it's no wonder the film has assumed near-mythic status in the imaginations of fear-friendly fanboys. Designed as a response to the recent torture-porn strain of horror cinema, "Cabin" feels less like the final nail in that trend's coffin than the start of something new: a smarter, more self-aware kind of chiller that still delivers the scares.

[skipped spoilery mid-section of review]

With plot holes aplenty, fanatics can pick the film apart if they please. For starters, the setting only makes sense for a couple of the scenarios at hand. But the idea is so ambitious and fresh, most will gladly play along. If the execution brings any regrets, it's that first-time director Goddard (who co-wrote "Cloverfield") seems somewhat outmatched by the considerable demands of his own high concept. Given all the film gets right, there's no question this is one of the most exciting feature debuts of the last few years, but it's a shame Whedon (who directed the second unit) or someone more polished wasn't there to make the cabin, the woods and the cardboard characters as entertaining as the mind-warping secret that lies beneath.
Other than the use of the term "auds," this review excites me.

Re: The Cabin In The Woods (Dir. Goddard, 2010, Jenkins, Whitford)

Saw a screening last night in Toronto with Goddard in attendance. The Cabin in the Woods FUCKING RULES. I'm not going to spoil anything, and frankly, there is so much insane shit in this movie, you wouldn't believe me if I tried. I think that Variety review is a little unfair to Goddard, since with the budget available, I thought he killed it.

The script has Whedon all over it, the tone feels like the best "Buffy" eps, a good balance between scary and witty. Some of the twists are given away in the trailer, but they are doing a good job of keeping the best stuff under wraps. It's been a long wait for this one, but the movie plays through the roof with a good audience, so I'm sure everyone will feel it was worth the wait. I can't wait to see this again, and even if there are a few plot holes, you'll be howling with laughter and wondering how the hell a movie like this even got made in the first place. I can't think of a single movie that is like this one, a complete original. It is so rare to see that now, I really hope people take to this one.

I loved every minute of The Cabin in the Woods and I'll be there again on opening day, forcing all my friends to come with me. Once it is out, I definitely would like to talk more about it (with spoilers) but I think it would be a dick move to even post spoilers on this one, because seeing it play out on screen with NO IDEA where it is headed, was a blast. 5/5 stars.

So is it safe to say that the trailer is lame but the movie is awesome?

Absolutely - Drew even talked about the difficulties in marketing a movie like this - you don't want to tip your hat too much but you also don't want to look too generic. I think word of mouth will have to carry this one, because the marketing does look like nothing special (although I do think the poster nails it).

Cool -and if I think what you're saying about the poster (that it is more in tune with the overall vibe of the movie?? (DON'T TELL ME/US EITHER!!!) - then I will get my hopes up.

Re: The Cabin In The Woods (Dir. Goddard, 2010, Jenkins, Whitford)

OK, so I got to see a second early screening of this movie, and while I thought it was even better the second time, I must say the audience of 'regular people' were certainly less enthused than the crowd of Whedonites I saw it with the first time. Now I'm really interested to see how the general public will react to this movie, especially considering there is a whole comedy aspect they aren't even hinting at in the ads. I heard lots of people calling it 'a waste of time' afterwards - I think they either weren't smart enough to realize what Whedon and Goddard were saying about the horror genre, or just didn't dig the strangeness in general... hopefully

Looking forward to this one. I can tell from the ads this isn't a typical slasher movie.

Would you mind spoilerizing what you think Whedon and Goddard are saying about the horror genre?

No offense but one of my biggest pet peeves is definitely when people accuse somebody of not being smart enough or not getting it when they simply don't enjoy a particular movie.

If the movie is so complicated that people actually don't get it, then it's a failure in my opinion.

My dad once told me that it takes a complex mind to make something simple and it takes a simple mind to make something complex.

I disagree in this case. I think that in the case of blockbusters, then yes, the filmmakers need to make it accessible to as many people as possible. However, if it's something made for genre fans by other fellow geeks, then it's okay to play more to that crowd than others.

Yeah...going to have to disagree. A lot of people hated the ending to No Country for Old Men. Why? Cuz they didn't get it. It was obvious by the end. Though some people didn't get it. And for some reason failed to connect the dots to the title w/ what was being said too.

Some movies demand that the viewer pay attention and explore and find out the details w/ the characters. Some do not. Neither is wrong. But what is wrong is when the viewer is displeased for failing to have worked on it. If you didn't get it cuz you literally missed something somehow? That's cool. Happens all the time. If you fail to understand what was there and everything that it was giving to you. It's failure on your part or the filmmaker in their way to explain it better...depending on the movie.

Re: The Cabin In The Woods (Dir. Goddard, 2010, Jenkins, Whitford)

I saw this in Berkeley last Wednesday with Drew Goddard and Amy Acker in attendance, and I thought it was a blast. The crowd seemed to love it too, but I agree with everyone else here: avoid the trailers, hell, even the tv spots if you can. Both friends I saw this with went in blind (one a horror fan, one not) and they liked it as much as I did.

It is a very clever, gory, entertaining movie. I missed a few lines of dialogue too due to laughter from the crowd. The movie also has some "going to have to pause that on Blu Ray" scenes. Pretty much all I could want in a movie like this. I'm going to watch it again in a few days in SF.

The Q/A afterwards was ok, but you can tell that Goddard was passionate about it. Seems like a cool guy, also told a funny story about his first on set experience with John Carpenter. Acker was a bit more reserved, understandably so since most questions were for Goddard. Apparently she is a big time pothead though haha.

***1/2 out of ****

Can someone spoil what supposedly makes this that interesting? Doubt i'll see it in theaters, so i'm curious.

In this case, I just want to be entertained. I don't give a damn how "clever" it's supposed to be. As long as it's fun, I'll enjoy it.

Currently at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. This has got to be one of the highest rated films that had a 3 year delay from the end of its production.

Saw a preview screening of it tonight. I thought it was awesome in parts and awful in others, and couldn't help but feel the concept could have been better executed. It was a great ride though, and a total mindfuck.

Haha definitely was a welcome sight. And Kristen Connolly needs to do more movies, she is gorgeous. Looks like Uma Thurman in Les Miserables a bit.

I saw it again tonight in San Francisco and it held up. You notice a lot of things that were easily missed on a first viewing. Once again the crowd was totally into it. This'll be a movie I stick into my blu ray player quite often I think.

It is all kinds of awesome too that this will probably top 80% on rotten tomatoes once all the reviews come in, word of mouth will hopefully make it a hit. AV Club had a good review and they usually dislike horror movies. On the other end of the spectrum, Rex Reed's review was atrocious. Legitimately seems like he either fell asleep or left during huge chunks of the movie and made stuff up, as he messes up a lot of what happens and points out scenes that were nowhere to be seen. He also ruins some of the surprises. Dick move.

I might take a jumpy lady friend to see this on friday the 13th. Could try the ol popcorn trick
