A lot of the films on his list (i.e. all the ones he mentions he's taking to Ebertfest) are listed as 07 films. Granted, it's always hard to tell with those kinds of films that always seem to be on a festival circuit and never get properly released, but Chop Shop, The Band's Visit, The Fall, and Shotgun Stories have all been circulating festivals for at least a year, and I believe I was able to immediately rent all of them on Netflix.

They go by US theatrical release, not festival showings, when considering what year a movie is part of.
The Bands Visit showed in New York and LA last year (for limited engagement showings) for a Best Foreign nomination, it wasn't formally released theatrically in the US until Feb 8th, 2008.
Chop Shop got its theatrical release on Feb 27th, 2008.
The Fall, while listed as a 2006 movie, wasn't released until May 28th, 2008.
Shotgun Stories was given its theatrical release on March 26th, 2008.
As such, Chop Shop, Shotgun Stories and The Fall are eligable for oscars this year.

I saw that. Gonna watch it as soon as I finish The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (I think Netflix only streams English dubs, btw EDIT: nevermind, Breathless is in French. I guess they gave us DBaB because the actors re-recorded their own lines in English).

OK, After watching Chop Shop on Netflix, I gotta say I agree with Ebert. A fantastic film. Reminds me a lot of Slumdog, though obviously on a much smaller scale and without the grandeur.

Ebert should just put out a top ten, he's been doing it since the 60's, and he is the most important movie critic around... he probably thinks it is silly just like the star system, but he shouldn't forget that it's also fun. Here's the link to his past top 10's:

Siskel had some interesting picks on his lists: Oh, God!; Time After Time; Blues Brothers; The Fly; Midnight Run; Die Hard 2; Wayne's World; Under Seige. These aren't movies I would normally expect to see in a prominent critic's top 10. Nothing against these movies in the least, they just seem atypical.
I didn't realize 'Pleasantville' was so well regarded. Top 3 for both of them that year. Great movie.

Yeah, I remember when Pleasantville came out they made a huge deal on how it was one of the very few movies that used special effects to actually tell the story itself.

Ebert's lists mean nothing to me anymore. His 2007 list had Juno over There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men. I don't think you can ever come back from that.

After recently seeing The Wrestler, Milk, Slumdog Millionaire and Revolutionary Road, my opinion hasn't changed. 2008 was a bad year -- there were only about 2 or 3 great films.

No Forgetting Sarah Marshall? Blasphemy.
