^ I think the DVD sales/rentals of movies like the SAW franchise and Jason Statham movies are what keeps them in the green.

Someone I know on a knife forum made the knife he uses in the film. They expect big sales on that model. Tops is doing the production run.

All those straight to DVD animated Marvel movies also bring in decent cash for them.

Tyler Perry's Madea films and Saw are huge for this company. They know they have at least 2 hit films per year thanks to those. They cost next to nothing to make.

LionsGate's Top 10 grossing films:

1 Fahrenheit 9/11 Lions $119,194,771 6/23/04
2 Saw II Lions $87,039,965 10/28/05
3 Saw III LGF $80,238,724 10/27/06
4 Saw IV LGF $63,300,095 10/26/07
5 Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion LGF $63,257,940 2/24/06
6 Saw V LGF $56,687,944 10/24/08
7 Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married LGF $55,204,525 10/12/07
8 Saw Lions $55,185,045 10/29/04
9 Crash Lions $54,580,300 5/6/05

Fancy pants critics? For a Punisher movie? Most critics won't even touch this thing.

I'm surprised about all the folks here who enjoyed it, but to each their own. But if you take away the Punisher license this is no different than the dime-a-dozen, direct-to-DVD mob movies that cross my desk every month. Jigsaw wasn't played over-the-top in a fun way...it was just a shitty performance, and since West is a fantastic actor I completely blame Lexi for providing no direction to her actors. And the story was just as cliched as a million other damsel-in-distress crime films. The fact that maybe only two or three deaths out of how many (100?) shows the lack of creativity of something that should revel in its protagonist entertainingly mowing down everyone in his path.

Critics only see movies they think are good?

Crash was overrated in my book but I thought it brought in more money. Has anyone seen the new Crash TV series?

"Gratuitous" [anything] usually is very entertaining.

Brokeback totally deserved it. Crash was a bloated piece. Too many places for that film to be even worthwhile watching

Um I thought it was pretty clear that West played this so far over the top as he is a pretty good actor... This was just a lovely gratitous, mindless, over the top piece of white trash cinema. I was thinking at first wow this isnt even going to be good in a bad way, then it kicks in and I loved it. Once he goes after the free running guys and we get the

Crash TV series? What the hell . . ? I finally saw Crash a few months ago after reading all the crap about it on the web. What a joke. I can't think of a more un-deserving best picture. Even though I disagree with MANY that one is at the top.

Thomas Jane was woefully miscast as the Punisher. This one "looks" much better all around. I hope it does well.

With that said, I ain't seeing it in the threatre, but will most certainly rent or blindbuy for cheap when the time comes.

That is arguably the best scene in the movie. All 50 of us in the theater were laughing our asses off at that.

The boards on BOM are saying 8th place opener with 4 Million for the weekend

The 2004 movie did $13 million opening (against Kill Bill VOL 2) Domestic: $33, Foreign: $20 = Worldwide: $54. Also DVD sales were high enough to get War Zone made.

So what went wrong? (besides saying the movie sucks)

Loss of Thomas Jane?
No 'big' names in it?
Reboot instead of sequel?
Bad timing with Twilight, holidays, and other action films?
Lack of promotion?

Anyone think there will there be a sequel be it theatrical or DVD?

Like I said in the other thread, "War Zone" was the biggest pile of dog shit I've seen all year. The Thomas Jane version, had it been set in NYC rather than Florida, would be the "Punisher" to beat.

"War Zone" had nothing going for it other than Stevenson looking the part, too bad the man showed no charisma on screen, the writing was the worst I've heard in a long while, the "New Yawk" mob accents sounded like what a first time writer would assume they would sound like. I mean people were laughing at the delivery of the lines last night but at all the wrong spots. There was clearly a "Batman & Robin" vibe at the theater with the few people in attendance and I think Lexi Alexander went to the Joel Schumacher school of lighting, what was up with all the neon lighting? Seriously, the church Castle talked to the priest at? Looked like it was set up for a rave once shooting had finished.

Being over-the-top is one thing, being hideously bad is another. This movie deserved to flop with the $4 million opening and I hope it dies quickly.

Not to defend, but Lexi said she decided to match the color schemes of the comics, and even had wardrobe start over so everyone would be in the same colors.

Punisher 2? Is this not the 3rd movie of this comic hero?

If anyone has seen the Lexi Belle the girl who directed this movie. She is really hot. To those who did see this movie was this one set on Tampa too? I never could figure out why the first one was set there.

Not set in Tampa. The first one was set there because Tampa was offering some good tax breaks.
