I would agree, and I'm also one that typically hates kids in movies. The kids in the first JP aren't bad at all and are just kids. Contrast that to say, Lost World which is far more terrible and ruined the movie for me.

Only a fucking moron with no heart would think E.T. was overrated.
These are the kind of assholes who, when they saw that iconic shot of Elliot and E.T. flying across the brightest of moons, turned to the guy sitting next to them, snorted, and went "Yeah right, like that could ever happen!".
They should all die. These kind of cynical assholes contribute absolutely nothing worthwhile to society.

One iconic shot doesn't a movie make.

My vote goes to Close Encounters, for the various reasons listed above.
However, I can accept the other reasons given as to why I feel that way.

I don't know what to choose. Do I have to choose? Spielberg has been one of my favorite film-makers since childhood and I love all the movies mentioned in this thread. Admittedly, I have not seen 1941.
An under-rated list would be easier. I would put Minority Report and A.I. on that list.

E.T. No contest.
I really wasn't blown away by it as a seven-year-old in '82, and I'm not much more wowed by it now. Honestly, I look at it today and think that nearly any director could make that kind of film, with the right budget.
Spielberg doesn't achieve the narrative or visceral revelations in E.T. that he did in Raiders, Close Encounters, Saving Private Ryan or even Duel.
The same heights aren't scaled, and frankly I come away from the experience of watching E.T. feeling like it was the first of several over-the-top efforts by a master filmmaker to successfully manipulate a mass audience, both emotionally and financially.
This takes nothing at all away from Spielberg's genius--he may very well be remembered as the Michael Jordan of American filmmakers. But while E.T. moved millions to tears, it did nothing for me.
A.I. is a close second in this category, followed by Jurassic Park.

I notice a pattern of movies that were hailed as great when they came out have gotten a lot of dislike over the years. ROCKY and now E.T.
But I think it is because these films were no doubt seen after the people saw movies that ripped them off over the years.

Never cared for the original ROCKY much either, but I freakin' love ROCKY III and ROCKY IV for being the awesome cartoons that they are.

Since I think that 8 of the 9 movies on the poll are masterpieces with Jurassic Park being a great movie, I really didn't have any choice but to vote Other.
Since I voted for other, my choice would be Nothing. I looked at his filmography and don't think any of his movies are overrated.

E.T. for me. I never particularly cared for it and didn't understand all the hoopla over it.
A.I. was a lousy movie, but I don't remember it being rated that highly, thus it can't be the most overrated.

I dunno about that... I'm 37, total 70s/80s kid, and grew up watching both movies umpteen thousand times. I don't DISLIKE E.T., but I remember being wholly unimpressed when I saw at age 11 and that sentiment really hasn't changed.

Same here although I do really like Rocky I and II, but they are not as enjoyable and rewatchable as III and IV.

E.T. on the other-hand has definitely lost massive amounts of popularity. Blade Runner, The Thing, & Gandhi seem to be the most highly regarded movies of the year 1982 now.

Wow, I just can't fathom the huge number of votes for ET and Close Encounters combined, arguably his two greatest films.
My vote is for Saving Private Ryan, cause while many people feel it shouldn't have lost to Shakespeare in Love, my opinion is not only is Shakespear In Love a better film (which isn't saying much), but Saving Private Ryan should not even have been nominated. The opening 20 minutes are a visceral experience and groundbreaking for its time. The rest of the movie is held up by a weak script and a completely illogical premise-

I would have to agree with those who cited Saving From Ryan. Since that movie came out at the theaters, I have had arguments with people about that movie. It's not that I don't find merit in the film, I think the battle scenes are incredible, but the overall story was just too sappy and manipulative. It really did nothing for me. I secretly was wishing that they would decide to just let Private Ryan die. And that's the reason why I have never thrown a fit about it not winning Best Picture that year.
