Johnny Depp in "The Lone Ranger"

I may be in the minority here, but I'll take a Lone Ranger movie over most of the comic book films that are getting made. It probably won't be particularly good with Bruckheimer, but it could be a fun popcorn movie.
However, I wouldn't want Clooney. I think most of the big name stars would look kind of ridiculous in the role.

Clooney would be better than Cage.

George Clooney in talks to star in 'Lone Ranger'?
Los Angeles News.Net
Monday 29th September, 2008 (ANI)
London, Sept 29 : Hollywood hunk George Clooney is reportedly in talks to star in the upcoming Disney remake of the 'Lone Ranger'.
Johnny Depp has signed on to play the Indian sidekick Tonto in the movie, based on the popular Fifties television show - adapted from George W Trendle's classic old-time radio show - about the famously masked Texas Ranger.
And now, a source is saying that Clooney is being tipped to play the title role in the film, which will be written by the team behind the huge blockbuster 'Pirates Of The Caribbean'.
"Word is that George Clooney has shown a lot of interest in the role of the Lone Ranger and the studio has been talking to him about it," The Daily Express quoted the source, as saying.
"It was rumoured that Nicolas Cage was up for the role but that fizzled out a while ago. Clooney's name has come up quite a number of times since," the source added.

Mike Newell also did Four Weddings and A Funeral, Donnie Brasco, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Not too bad if you ask me. He also directed the upcoming Prince of Persia so it looks like he's Disney's go to guy for family action films.

Helena Bonham Carter, Dwight Yoakam and Barry Pepper are in talks to join the growing cast of Disney’s The Lone Ranger.
Gore Verbinski is returning to Disney to direct the movie, which is being toplined by Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.
The movie, being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, sees Tonto, played by Depp, take a much more prominent role in the story of a Texas Ranger (Hammer) left for dead who dons the masked identity known as the Lone Ranger.
If a deal makes, Carter will play the madam of a brothel who deals with gentlemen and scoundrels.
Yoakam, currently shooting Billy Bob Thornton’s Jayne Mansfield’s Car, will play Butch Cavendish, leader of the gang that attacks the ranger and leaves his for dead.
Pepper, Emmy-nominated for his turn as Bobby Kennedy in The Kennedys, will act as a military officer.
The cast already includes Tom Wilkinson, who plays a railroad tycoon with dubious intentions.
A mid-October start date in Texas and New Mexico is being planned.

"Disney Halts Johnny Depp's 'Lone Ranger'
http://www.deadline.com/2011/08/shoc...s-lone-ranger/
In a stunning development, Disney has shut down production on The Lone Ranger, the Gore Verbinski-directed period Western that was to star Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the title character. Jerry Bruckheimer is the producer and the script's by Justin Haythe. I'm told this all just happened, and Disney pulled the plug because the budget, which I've heard the filmmakers were trying to reduce from $250 million--I've heard from insider that they'd gotten down to $232 million, but whatever the number, it wasn't close to the $200 million that Disney wanted to spend.

christ, a $250 million western? There is no reason a film should cost that much unless they are destroying a major city.

No way was it ever going to cost this much; it just sounds like a more responsible excuse than "Cowboys & Aliens fucked it up for anyone who wanted to do a Western".

What Disney should have done is cancel John Carter. I can't believe they bet 300 million dollars on a film led by Taylor Kitsch. That's just beyond belief? What are they thinking? I can only imagine they're betting on the property. But what how did Kitsch get this kind of gig?
Of course, now that I saw that, the film will be a huge hit. But Taylor Kitsch is really a nobody at this point. He's not a guy you bet 100 million on, much less 300 million.
