Johnny Depp in "The Lone Ranger"

From slashfilm:
Johnny Depp has been cast as The Lone Ranger in the upcoming Jerry Bruckheimer produced adaptation of the classic old-time radio and early television show created by George W. Trendle. Depp will play a masked Texas Ranger in the Old West who rights injustices with the aid of his native American assistant, Tonto. He gallops along on his white horse Silver. The characters signature quote is Hi-yo, Silver, away! Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have been writing the script. No start or release dates have been announced.

Good casting. This could be a cool film if done right. How come it seems like Johnny Depp joins like 3 or 4 new movies each month?

Depp as The Mad Hatter in Burton's Alice was a foregone conclusion. A fourth Pirates movie sounds like total overkill, but studios love their cash cow franchises.

Please PLEASE no more "Pirates" movies Johnny. They won't make another without you. Also, don't forget him possibly joining the next "Batman" cast. Which would be sweet.

Back to the subject, this could work.....with Depp. Does anyone even want a "Lone Ranger" movie? My guess would be no. With Depp, I think they would. Not crazy with Bruckheimer being attached to the project though.

Depp sounds fine, but I'm not so sure about Bruckheimer.

But does he look the part of a Texas Ranger? (Is he not a little-short).

I don't think so I would pass on this as I think a bigger guy (6-3)should fill those boots.

My dad was a big Lone Ranger fan, so we used to enjoy the old shows and even the neat (for its time) NES game. Not a fan of Depp, though, so I'll be skipping this one.

Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are saying he won't be playing the Lone Ranger but his sidekick Tonto. Disappointed in his trifecta of movie roles revealed today.

This is great news. No doubt Depp is looking to parallel the career of the great Klinton Spilsbury.

Yeah, the quote on slashfilm has been changed from "as" to "in". Perhaps a mod can change the thread title to reflect this?

Johnny Depp is my favorite actor, so he gets the benefit of the doubt. However, I would much rather see him in some of his other rumored projects (Dark Shadows, Shantaram, and The Rum Diary) as opposed to Rango, The Lone Ranger, and Pirates 4.

He will be great as the Mad Hatter, and since it is motion capture, that role should not take much time from his schedule.

I, for one, am looking forward to a long, drawn out sequence with multiple Tontos in the afterlife.

Clooney in talks to star

That means he will spend 99% of the movie maskless, 25% shirtless, never get dirty or bested by anyone, super suave, and keen on his own shit smell.

I don't see how Depp or Clooney could top Klinton Spilsbury's stellar performance as the masked man.
