Oofah. Can't believe the Allen bashing on this site. I think he's one of the very few truly great living directors. Might as well say Scorsese or Kubrick suck.

People irrationally claim Star Wars is the better movie because they saw it as kids. Star Wars' story may have the appeal of "the hero's quest," but Annie Hall is pretty much the only movie that deals with relationships on honest terms.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Star Wars too, but beyond the special effects there really isn't much to the film. I'm mostly just bitter because Star Wars effectively ended "New Hollywood" and pretty much ended the American film renaissance of 70s.

In the end, I guess it doesn't really matter because both Allen and Lucas have squandered their legacy. It just took Lucas A LOT less time.

I really don't see a squandering of legacy from either guy. Lucas just doesn't seem to have grown as a filmmaker and keeps going back and revising his crown jewel.

Allen, while he does have his particular obsessions and subject matter, has always pushed himself as a filmmaker with mixed results. While Curse of the Jade Scorpion was lame, if you've seen Match Point and Vicky Christina Barcelona, I really don't see where his "legacy" has been squandered.

As much as I don't like Allen (and love Star Wars) I wouldn't compare Star Wars to Annie Hall, totally two different movies, apples and oranges.

I'm sure if we had two Annie Hall sequels,

twenty years later threw in some shitty prequels,

pumped out a bunch of cartoons, etc.,

it might be a different story. As it is, there was one Annie Hall, and it was great, and that's what people remember.

= J
Apparently, that is the case.

Where to begin with this. Manhattan and Manhattan Murder Mystery were in no way sequels to Annie Hall. No more than Raging Bull was the sequel to Taxi Driver. Many directors cast actors several times to good effect.

Ants was a shitty cartoon that Allen played a voice on but did not write or direct.

He's directed over 40 films, more than a few of which are considered classics.

wow, only 5 picks for the Deer Hunter. I'm sorry, but that was one of the most boring long pretentious pieces of shit i've ever seen (although the first russian roulette scene is good)

I showed KRAMER VS. KRAMER to a 20 year old single mom and she cried.
She's used to watching horror movies and stuff her age group have grown up on.
Like many of you youngings who grew up on the loser againest all odds can win theme must have seen them before seeing ROCKY. So you see ROCKY as this no big deal movie.

I also picked The Deer Hunter. Watching it again, I find that a lot of its impact came from the overwhelming rejection of the Vietnam War by the general public and less to do with its actual merits. I'd much rather watch something like Platoon for my Vietnam fix.

As far as Star Wars versus Annie Hall, Annie Hall may not have had as much mass influence as Star Wars, but it's certainly a better made film. Although, all things considered, I actually prefer Love and Death and Manhattan.
