Re: The Box (Richard Kelly, 2009)

Why does an idea this simple need CGI and action? When I first heard the idea for it I figured it would be this foreign-type psychological drama, presenting the inner conflict as well as the conflict of a husband and wife trying to decide what to do, and perhaps the aftermath of their decision.

This trailer doesn't look like that at all.

I'm intrigued, but I have a feeling that this just isn't going to work.

I don't totally get how the premise of what this flick is based around can be stretched out to a two hour film. I'm assuming that the climax will be their decision, but how can you build that up for so long? Going for what they're going for instead of what I thought it would be, I just don't see how it can be a full movie.

Hearing the music at the end of this trailer made me just want to go watch the next Saw movie instead. How bad is that?

I need to track down the script for this one.

EDIT:

That didn't take long to find.

Re: The Box (Richard Kelly, 2009)

There was an interview with Richard K on AICN where he goes into the runtime (it isn't 2 hours long) and rating (it's basically a Twilight Zone/"PG" rated movie given a PG-13 due to the disfigurement.)

Re: The Box (Richard Kelly, 2009)

Has the running time been announced? The script is just about every bit of what is typically interpreted as two hours long, give or take. Actually the version I found really quick jumps right into the story, as in the very first scene, and from what I see in that trailer it doesn't look like that's what the finished film will do.

Don't get me wrong, I'm interested, and will likely go see this day 1 just because it is at least something different.

How was the Twilight Zone episode "Button, Button"? It's a short version based off of the same short story.

Looks interesting. My gut feeling tells me 9/10 people would actually push the button.

So that means you'll have to skip it in theaters, right?

This movie looks interesting but these Boston accents (or attempts at them) have to stop. It's almost on the same distracting level as Tom Hanks' hair in The Da Vinci Code. Just terrible

the accents in the movie are supposed to be southern.

My bad. I'm gonna have to check out that trailer again then cause I could have sworn it was Boston. But let me recant my last statement and replace it with people shouldn't shouldn't do accents they aren't capable of doing ie. Boston, Southern and Canadian (we don't all say eh)

He'll go. And he'll hope the film breaks so it'll take 5 or so minutes to repair.

Rewatched the trailer, and boy does this look to be pretty disappointing. The only thing intriguing to me is Langella...

Re: The Box (Richard Kelly, 2009)

Well the release has been moved again (!!!!!!!!!!!)..,
But this time its not too bad.
Since Universal movie The Wolf Man from Nov. 6 back till Feb 2010 , WB has pushed back the release of the Box from October 30 to take Wolf Man's spot on Nov. 6.
I think this is a good move on a business level but still sucks it was pushed back a week on a general i kinda wanna see this level.

Here's the Twilight Zone episode based on the original short story in case anyone wants to see it (Warning: lots of lethal overacting on display):

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/p4SYhiYUoqo&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/p4SYhiYUoqo&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qm3Za-SgaqY&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qm3Za-SgaqY&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I just hope Cameron Diaz and James Marsden give better performances than Mare Winningham and Brad Davis, but that shouldn't be too hard.

Re: The Box (Richard Kelly, 2009)

Wow, just got back from a press screening of this one. The premise definitely got my attention but MAN is there a lot behind the curtain once you get passed the trailer.

Richard Kelly is going for a mind fuck morality piece here. I haven't read the script but have read the comparisons from the short story and Twilight Zone ep. This goes off in an entirely different direction.

Re: The Box (Richard Kelly, 2009)

so... do you recommend it or not? on the fence on this one. Love Donnie Darko, hated Southland Tales. Premise sounds interersting but hate Cameron Diaz

Re: The Box (Richard Kelly, 2009)

Regarding the twist in the movie, is it
Spoiler:
That Langella is an alien and the Box shows that humans have no control over their own fates?
